To tell DD to go to car dealer and complain

DD bought her first car last summer very happy with the car and not actually had many issues. DD was pulled over the other week for a random stop and discovered her V5 hadn’t been changed after 6 months of owning the car (she contacted the dealer the next morning and they’re sorting it) then last night her tyre went and when someone came out to replace it we realised she’s been sold the car with no locking lug nut meaning it’s cost even more to get the tyre fixed. I told her to get a receipt so she could take it to the dealers when she’s home (away with friends for a long weekend atm). She’s phoned the dealers this morning who have told her that because it is on the system that it was in the drivers side door there’s nothing they will do (everything that was in the car when she picked it up is in a bag in the boot and it’s definitely not in there) also because it’s outisde 30 days they won’t replace it for her either.
It’s cost nearly £200 to get the tyre changed because of this issue and we are a bit lost on what to do.

It costs about a fiver for a "magic" locking wheel nut remover on eBay - which is why most locking wheel nuts are a waste of time. Some are also prone to the head snapping off - doesn't affect the security of the wheel, but does need drilling out.

The V5 she should have picked up on herself. But..

V5 was being chased up from previous owner during the hand over

WTF? She bought a car and the dealer didn't have the V5?

Grumpasaurous · 04/04/2019 17:23

You don’t need to do anything with a v5 now physically.

It’s all done on line, when I sold our old car two years ago I just followed the instructions. Showed the screen to the purchaser. They then went on line and taxed it and declared it as theirs.

There is nothing you could possibly claim from the garage at this point. The VC5 issue is being sorted and not really relevant in terms of the tyre situation anyway.

@Eliza9919, as you have already been told no, it is not illegal. I had the tyre slime provided when I bought the car, but that doesn't work if you've picked up a hole in the wall, or on anything amounting to more than a pin prick. I had already slimed it and noticed that the tyre still wasn't inflating.

Having since been to my regular tyre guy, he has told me (as another pp has said) that the slime is next to useless and if you've a slight puncture which could otherwise be repaired, it can't be once the tyre has been slimed.

@SoupDragon - I didn't know they charged for taking tyres off without a locking nut, nationals include fitting in their tyre price. But I use an independent normally. when we couldn't find dh's and they had no safe way of getting the tyre off, one of the guys drove home to get one from his other car which would fit. They asked me for a fiver to cover his fuel, which I was going to do anyway.

Not true, tyre fitters just don’t want to clean up the mess and would rather sell you a new tyre.

Universal locking nut tools are pretty crap, though you can get quite an expensive one which uses a sacrificial insert (costs about £10/car) and is incredible. You hammer it on to the first nut which deforms the insert and Bob’s your uncle. Takes under 10 mins to remove 4 locking nuts. My friend charges £50 for this service.

Fitting being simply removing the wheel and replacing the tyre, not faffing about with locking wheel nuts that have no key for them.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/04/2019 18:04

We've always had to supply our locking wheel nut bit to the garage, I don't think they use the spanner handle bit, just the nut bit. When the dealer forgot to put ours back in we had to buy a new one and it wasn't cheap, now we religiously check it's back in the box before driving off.

It's a pain, but lesson learnt. If the dealer are saying they supplied it then I don't think there's much you can do.

I would suggest you either teach your DD how to change a tyre (if she has a spare) or get a compressor with spray sealant. Sealant won't fix all tyre problems but can at least buy you some time to get some quotes and go to a garage. It often costs more for someone to come to you and tyre costs vary significantly.

Sorry the dealer are being unhelpful, our Citroen garage were just like this.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/04/2019 18:07

if you've a slight puncture which could otherwise be repaired, it can't be once the tyre has been slimed.

Not so, our sealant is water soluble so can be washed out and the tyre repaired. You need a garage who aren't lazy enough just to sell you a new tyre though. Our tyres are expensive so it's worth it for us (plus no physical spare wheel anyway), so sealant is better than nothing.

They used to charge a lot as they had to shear off the locking wheel nut. My friend spend £800 getting all 4 wheels done so she could change her tyres if needed. A week later hoovering out hervcar she found the boy for removing the locking nuts 😖
