Is £35 weekly reasonable for a single person's grocery shop?

Out of interest, as I think prices are continuing to steadily go up. On average I spend £35 - so some weeks less and others more. Includes convenience foods like soups from the chilled section and 'easy' things like prepared trays of veggies as I have chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

What range would you say is reasonable for a single person's grocery shop?

I live alone and spend around £200 a month on groceries. Now wondering if I should be trying to cut down more. I do occasionally make meals to last more than a day but perhaps I should cook at home more.

buying frozen pizzas and burgers from Aldi doesn't appeal
There are other ways of cutting the food budget down though which don't rely on buying crappy processed foods.
Still, as I think everyone agrees, it's down to individual choice.

userxx · 05/04/2019 13:46

@Flyhighmypretties is that purely on food or does it include toiletries and booze?

Flyhighmypretties · 07/04/2019 10:04

@userxx mostly food. I don't buy alcohol often and get a lot of toiletries online. Some of what I buy lasts longer (jars of coffee etc) but it's mostly lunches and dinners. I need to get better at budgeting!

You can buy three ready meals for £6 in Tesco. Add veg, salad and what ever you need and it is cheap for half the week .

it is your choice op, and your money.

I am single and suffer with chronic illness.
So I am very limited to how much I manage to cook but I am helped by a personal care assistant.
I spend no more than £40-45 every 2 weeks and this includes toiletries, household stuff.
Always frozen veg(steam fresh). Fresh soups but freeze them too enough for 2 portions for me.
I bought an extra freezer.
Like baked potatoes in winter with various fillings
Freeze meat e.g. gluten free sausages(on special offer) divided into smaller portions, same with root mash split into 3 portions and freeze.
Buy frozen ready to cook chicken breast and there's plenty which lasts 3days.
I do only have one main meal a day i.e.. protein and veg.
I do sometimes buy 3 frozen ready meals for £6 in winter but not regularly
In summer I switch to salads with chicken.
Breakfast is either porridge or banana on toast.
Lunch is a sandwich with/without soup.
If I was able to cook for longer I would do batch cooking like I used to for many years but that's no doable anymore.
I have always had my shopping delivered with Asda as I cannot do shopping in stores.
If I need anything in-between shops my PCA gets it for me but this is rare.
I also freeze skimmed milk(1L) and butter(split into smaller portions)

I spend £200 pm, excluding toiletries, as a single person, shopping mostly in Lidl/Aldi and I take a packed lunch to work.

I feel that's too much when I see what people with families spend, but it's only just over £6 a day on all meals and snacks, fruit etc. I've tried to reduce it but can't seem to. I think food prices are rising so it's harder.

I think £35 a week is brilliant! I struggle to spend less than £70 for 2 adults and our ddog (I'm also pregnant)
In that £70 it's mainly fruit and ingredients for 14 meals (lunch and dinner) cleaning stuff and dog food.
My dp is a gym bunny so I find a lot of it is spent on meat for him, and I've been craving salty foods again so seem to buying ready salted crisps on a whim 😳

motherheroic · 07/04/2019 11:55

I do £70 for the month at Asda. And this also includes lots of snacks such as biscuits, chocolate etc.

Igetknockeddownbutgetupagain · 07/04/2019 14:31

Yep. Batch cook or no, £35-£40 is about what I spend. I’m single too.
