To make a break in a train journey?

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2019 08:02

This morning i have to go to place X. But then i need to be in place Y about three hours later.

If i buy a ticket to X and a separate ticket for Y Then later on get a bus back from Y. Costing about £19.

If however i buy ticket from home to Y return will cost £8. I would have to make a break in the journey. Can i do that or would i need to buy separate tickets?

Separate tickets

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2019 08:05

Reaaly? Even though its effectively the same journey?

I think it depends whether the ticket covers any route or not. I think it's probably best to call the company and ask their customer service.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/04/2019 08:08

Even if X is on the way to Y, if X station has ticket gates you’d have to explain to one of the staff & hope they’d bend the rules for you - twice.

IceRebel · 04/04/2019 08:08

Won't they have scribbled / hole punched / marked your ticket when you make the first journey? I wouldn't want to try and reuse it later as it would be very embarrassing to try and explain the situation, and the inspector will probably make you buy another ticket.

CCquavers · 04/04/2019 08:10

I know I haven’t been able to break the journey to my destination but I was / am able to break it on the way back.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2019 08:13

So you wouldn't get separate tickets then? Like you do for the return journey?

It can depend on the rules of that particular ticket. Cheaper tickets tend to have more restrictions on them meaning you have to travel on a specific train at the booked time that sort of thing. Some flexible tickets you just have to travel that day so a break I. The journey would be possible. You’d need to ask someone who knows about that specific ticket type.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/04/2019 08:16

How much is a single fro X to Y?

StrawberrySquash · 04/04/2019 08:20

Break of journet is allowed but only on the more flexible ticket types. Have a look on the links if the ticket name on thetrainline.
As for the gate issue, just explain to the staff and they'll let you out and in. I do it all the time.

Peghi · 04/04/2019 08:20

You can break your journey on the return leg generally.

Avallamp · 04/04/2019 08:21

How much is a

  • return from Home to X
  • return from X to Y.

If total is cheaper than £19
Get off a X on the way there
Don't get off at X on the way back.

(or Google the conditions of travel for the ticket you're buying)

StrawberrySquash · 04/04/2019 08:21

And make sure it's covered for any peak periods you are travelling in etc. I'd buy from a ticket office if possible and explain what you are doing or call customer services.

Avallamp · 04/04/2019 08:22

If ticket conditions say you can only break the return journey, just buy a return from X to Home, use the return ticket on the way out and the outward ticket on the way home.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 04/04/2019 08:23

Rules here for off peak travel

Avallamp · 04/04/2019 08:26

Lol I'm think I'm over invested in this... But here's the relevant text...

Break of journey
Break of journey is allowed on the outward and return portions of Off-Peak tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's validity code.

You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel on Off-Peak tickets unless the ticket restriction for the journey you are making does not allow it. If you intend to start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station, please call 03457 48 49 50 to check if it is available on your specific journey.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2019 08:31

Y is a natural break in the journey as i have to change trains there anyway. Does that make a difference?

OP posts:
TakingtheLeap · 04/04/2019 08:37

Especially if it's a changing station I'd expect staff to let you through the gates. When I have a long change I wave my ticket at them to get out to the town beyond the station! This seems no different as long as you're travelling on a train for which your ticket is valid (i.e. not peak if your ticket is off peak).

SileneOliveira · 04/04/2019 08:37

You can't book a ticket from London to Glasgow, get off and have lunch and a wee wander around Preston, then get back on a different train.

It doesn't work like that.

LillianGish · 04/04/2019 08:48

An impressive level of over investment Avallamp - do you work for National Rail Services Grin? Call that number OP and you'll have your answer.

Petalflowers · 04/04/2019 09:00

i agreewith Silene, in that you can’t go from A to C and stop if at B to visit the local castle. You may be lucky if you’re stopover is at somewhere like St Pancras where you need to change platforms to change trains. However, fits at a provincial station then you will probably have to surrender your ticket on leaving the station.

Peghi · 04/04/2019 09:03

If you have to change train and it's not Booked train only it's fine.

Drogosnextwife · 04/04/2019 09:09

I used to do a commute on 2 trains, so for me it would be place A to place B then another train to place C, but my train ticket would just say place A to place C. I could have stayed in place B for as long as I liked and used the same ticket (provided it was on the same day) Same on the way back if I had a return.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 04/04/2019 09:15

@SileneOliveira yes you can if it's a standard ticket, some of the super cheap in advance can only use one specific train tickets, you can't. I used to travel from London to Newcastle on a regular basis for work on a Monday morning so would travel up on Sunday and stop for a few hours in York to meet a friend for lunch, perfectly valid.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2019 09:31

Well its all academic now because my train has been cancelled. ICE ON THE TRACK???? Its a fucking lovely day and i am not wearing a coat Angry
