Not happy with tiler

Numptysod · 02/04/2019 20:29

So I had to have tiles removed and shower mixer reinstalled?

I like how it was done first time full tiles then half a Tile in corner of shower

Second time it's square tile tile square

Am I being unreasonable to say they got to restart?

What everyone opinions
Photo 1 or photo 2

That is the way tiling is supposed to be done. Full tiles take prominence, cut tiles at edges. Usually tiling starts In centre of wall or floor and works outwards

Jimjamjong · 02/04/2019 21:18

Some of the small tiles look inverted relative to the big tiles with light grey on top and dark grey on the bottom (in the middle rows). IMO this is what makes it look uneven.

Oblomov19 · 02/04/2019 21:26

I don't like the second. But it's personal, isn't it?

KnifeAngel · 02/04/2019 21:33

The second photo looks better.

burritofan · 02/04/2019 21:42

Once it's grouted I don't think you'll even notice, they're the sort of tiles designed to blend altogether rather than be looked at individually.

I'm more concerned about your 5% battery on your phone when you're using 3G, plug it in!

Numptysod · 02/04/2019 22:42

@burritofan Thanks 😆

Once it's done you won't notice, but of course you can ask.

Ofc you will have to pay for new tiles, and for their labour again, and they might not have time to do it immediately (ie if they have another job starting). So is it worth it?

Numptysod · 02/04/2019 22:48

Why should I pay for a messy job, I got 70 tiles - now he only used 55?

I think it looks nice. Anyway, life goes on...

Does your contract specify how the tiling should be done?

If not, you are certainly not unreasonable to ask for a change, but don't be surprised if you are charged for it.

Sanmerino · 03/04/2019 08:19

Of course you’re right
The tile layout should have been placed so there were equal cuts to the corners.
It’s basic stuff.

Sanmerino · 03/04/2019 08:21

It’s a lovely bathroom though Smile

Shodan · 03/04/2019 08:58

I can see why s/he has done it that way- the part-square tiles on the right are obviously the cuts from the tiles on the righthand side of the shower, so the pattern flows round the corner. I can't quite see the left hand wall, but it looks likes/he has done the same there. It is usual to start in the centre and work out, as a pp said.

Perhaps it won't seem as bad to you once it's grouted though?

But tbh if you want a specific pattern you should have said so- did you?

Numptysod · 03/04/2019 18:58

It was meant to be full full full but then as it now bigger it would be
Full full full (1/4 of a tile)

OP posts:
PineappleTart · 03/04/2019 19:02

Pic 2 annoyed me at first but then I realised the smaller side was matched to the half tile on the right hand side which bothers me much less, will be more pleasing when grouted

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 03/04/2019 20:15

I think it should have been full:full:full:1/4.
As it is now is very messy and doesn't balance with the first line of half tiles on the left which is actually the boxed-in area.

Hellenbackagen · 03/04/2019 20:25

I think a full tile from the corner would have looked better.

Is that what you're saying?

OneDayillSleep · 03/04/2019 20:27

I prefer the full tile version personally, they’ve tried to do it symmetrical only failed to measure the wall before starting. I’d ask them to start again if I was you, it looks messy with so many small tiles and them different sizes.

BlackSatinDancer · 03/04/2019 22:40

I prefer the 1st picture but 2nd is definitely the correct way to tile.
I think the problem in the 2nd picture isn't so much to do with the symmetry of the tiles but with the 'grain' on your tiles. I think the tiler could have tried to put tiles next to each other that are more uniformly patterned.
