There is a 10k near me in 7 weeks. Ive been running a couple of weeks now and I can just about manage a 5k.. note JUST. I want to motivate myself to eat a little better and thought this was a little aim to go for it.

Aibu to think i can train to do this in this time frame when i am eating rubbish and flakey with my training....???

You can, just build up the distance bit by bit and DO NOT worry about speed - your aiming to finish not beat Paula Radcliffe

fitzbilly · 31/03/2019 22:25

Yes that is manageable.

You need to run at least three times a week though, with one long run that your increase by 1k each week, so this week so five, next week 6, then 7 and so on.

I'd say go for it!

womandear · 31/03/2019 22:25

But stop eating rubbish and aim to run 3-4 times a week with some weights, yoga or similar the other days

fitzbilly · 31/03/2019 22:26

Yeah speed is irrelevant at this point.

mondaysaturday · 31/03/2019 22:28

Totally doable if you're not massively fussed about what time you get. You don't have to flat out run the entire distance. People can and do take short walk breaks during 10ks.

Timeforabiscuit · 31/03/2019 22:28

Yes - if you can run 5k you can run 10 - but it wont be pretty or easy.

Are you running in a group? Good chat can give you a boost (if you can speak), as long as you dont start off too fast, do sensible preparation and are prepared to write 2 days off for aches and pains (1st day you think you're fine, second you swear your body is fundamental broken).

Good luck!

megletthesecond · 31/03/2019 22:33

Yes. If you can do 5k now you'll be fine with a bit of training and slowing your speed.
I went from 5k to 10k with no training and had no problems. I just treated it as one Parkrun to warm up and the second half to find a faster pace. IIRC I was 1hr 10, it was a proper hot day too.

Teachtolive · 31/03/2019 22:44

Yeah you totally can. Look up Hal Higdons training programmes. It'll give you an outline of what you need to do. Good luck.

WithTwoGiantBoys · 31/03/2019 22:47

See if you can find a bridge to 10k app, with a program to get you from 5k to 10k. I did one of these, it was great but you need to commit to running three times a week.

You can totally do this, good for you!

PocketFluff · 31/03/2019 22:51

Definitely! I did a quick, condensed Couch to 5k in about 3 weeks then 5k to 10k in 6 more. A few more weeks after that I ran a half marathon in just over 2 hours. I'm going from being a non runner to running a marathon in 4 months. You just need to stick at it, have a plan and get out there 3 or 4 times a week! The hardest part is getting off the sofa.

Cookiedough123 · 31/03/2019 22:59

Wow thank you everyone for being so encouraging ill read up on the things you have posted. My biggest thing is motivation. I only need a few days being motivated and my mind set changes but its just getting through them first few days. And to the person who is running a marathon from a beginner in 4 months that is amazing!!! Good luck!

I like your thread title. It would probably take me 7 weeks to run 10k too Grin.

GuineaPiglet345 · 31/03/2019 23:07

If you want to then I’m sure you can. I’ve got good stamina so I could, and have, run 10k without any training after periods of not having done any running for ages. But I’m very very slow Grin

PocketFluff · 31/03/2019 23:23

Thank you! I honestly didn't think I'd get a place so didn't train to begin with. And then when I did, well, I'm a great procrastinator! I didn't plan to so couch to marathon in 4 months! But it's going really well, it's amazing what our bodies can do. Good luck!

Cookiedough123 · 08/04/2019 20:24

Just wanted to update that i entered the 10k thanks to lots of encouragement. Managing a 5k a bit better just want to build up my stamina a little! Its also meant that ive ate much better this week and after the first few days of headaches and tiredness i have much more energy now ive cut the rubbish out my diet.. win-win!!

Excellent! Well done you! When you really get into it you finally understanding what the attraction and buzz people get from exercise is about. Oh, and I did the marathon in just over 5 hours (not counting loo stops). So much fun!!
