HedTwigg · 11/07/2007 22:12

not 'children that'

"children that" is definitely wrong!

You are describing children WHO are PEOPLE, not objects

HedTwigg · 12/07/2007 10:41

So I'm wrong and right both at the same time.

That occurs so often its getting rather frightening actually

tissy · 12/07/2007 10:42

tiktok, that link made my head spin!

WendyWeber · 12/07/2007 10:44

OMG, they perpetuate runner's up on the winners page

aaaaargh!!!!! If the OUP get it wrong now what hope for the future?

WendyWeber · 12/07/2007 10:47

re OP, children "which" would be wrong, but I can sort of see that "that" is OK (though I would say who. I think).

NorksDrift · 12/07/2007 10:47

Look at this! (Scroll down to 2nd post by empfrench)
I weeped myself!

HedTwigg · 12/07/2007 10:48

who mentioned 'which' Jan?

OP posts:
HedTwigg · 12/07/2007 10:50

oh FGS .. English Students writing

theres not there's
stealthly not steathily
weeped not wept

this is why we shouldn't be aiming to up the numbers of students entering higher education, we should do it on ability

arrgghhhhhhhh .. stooooooopppppppiiiiiiddddd

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 12/07/2007 10:51

Me, twig!

What I mean is, "that" and "which" both sound as if they refer to things rather than people, but "that" can substitute correctly for "which" or for "who".

There. All better now?

WendyWeber · 12/07/2007 10:52

And English at UCL rather than Smalltown Ex-poly

HedTwigg · 12/07/2007 13:59

"Not 'children that'.

Arrrgghhhh,

(might not even be right but it's bugging me)."

Not to be pedantic but, if you're going to complain about grammar.

Judy1234 · 12/07/2007 18:53

"though style and habit favour 'who'"...

Surely that's good enough reason to use who and wince at that?

HedTwigg · 12/07/2007 19:14

theman are you trying to out-pedant me? ROFL

I'm sorry, but the first line runs from the title hence should not be capitalised.

And you really didn't just capitalise arrrgghhh did you.

I'll give you the it's but that was dealt with below.

OP posts:
theman · 13/07/2007 11:12

Sorry i thought that if it was a run on you would have done the standard..... so i apologise for misuse of capital letters.
still it should have been a capital letter to start the thread then.

WendyWeber · 13/07/2007 11:16

Oh dear, theman, if you're going to try to out-pedant a pedant like Twig you should never use a "sentence" like this:

"Not to be pedantic but, if you're going to complain about grammar."

WendyWeber · 13/07/2007 11:17

(And there is a capital letter at the start - it's A!)

HedTwigg · 13/07/2007 15:20

as in 'Am I being unreasonable'

OP posts:
HedTwigg · 13/07/2007 15:25

This looks like a nice parking place for a current teeth-on-edge:

girls with fair hair are blonde
boys with fair hair are blond. Get it? Blond. Blond. With no e.

That is, quite clearly but perhaps I should stress it for the avoidance of doubt, not relevant to anyone participating in this thread. I should think.

hairjack over.

haychee · 13/07/2007 19:14

I have Alevel English language and Alevel English literature, but sometimes when im typing sooo fast to get all of my points down in a heated discussion punctuation, spelling and grammer go right out of the window.
Apologies for that.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 13/07/2007 19:30

Hairjack! Like it

Elasticwoman · 13/07/2007 19:35

Professor of Grammar to wife: I'm sorry dear but I've fallen in love with another, and she me too.

Wife: Blimey I knew you had a girlfriend but I didn't know she was Chinese!
