Sinusitis- what the fuck?!

LottieLou90 · 31/03/2019 05:28

Hi all,

Apologies, posting here for traffic.

I’m sure I have sinusitis. I am currently getting over what has been an awful cold / flu thing and I feel like my head is going to explode now.

My nose is blocked to fuck, my eyes, ears, head, cheeks, jaw basically my whole face and head is so bloody painful I want to cry but I can’t because I might pass out from the pain. Also, my nose is making this ‘clicking’ sound like it’s attempting morse code and whenever I blow my nose, it’s like I’m blowing Slimer from Ghostbusters out (sorry tmi)

I’ve managed about 2 hours sleep so far. The things I have tried, and failed, to ease the pain - warm flannel over face, propping myself up in bed, paracetamol and ibuprofen, vicks rub under my nostrils and temples, massaging (practically rubbing) my head and face.

Nothings working. I’m fucking fucked off, DD6 will be up in about an hour as she is excited about mother’s day and it’s my birthday in a couple of days 😫

I just want to sleep. I’ve gone from feeling very sorry for myself to just pure anger from the agony.

Please, does anyone have any tips or advice? Does this sound like sinusitis? Need to hopefully minimise the pain for today at least.

Thanks.

Sorry, revolting question,

Is the ectoplasm coming out when you blow your nose green or yellow? I remember being asked this when I was suffering. Green was an indication that it was still viral, yellow that it was an infection which needed ABs.

Either way it is horrible and you have my total sympathy. I hope you are feeling better soon.

checkingforballoons · 31/03/2019 07:50

Seconding all of the advice on Sterimar spray and decongestants but I’d also suggest buying a couple of extra boxes of tissues. I’m just getting over a sinus infection myself and when the gunk started to shift I actually couldn’t believe the amount that came out. It just keep coming, I almost wished I could have measured how much. Sorry for TMI!

MoviesT · 31/03/2019 07:52

I have had trouble all my life...I recommend nasal sprays that include oxymetazoline and the version of Sudafed that includes pseudoephidrine. That version of Sudafed is only sold in proper pharmacies. If you have a hot wheat pack that can bring relief - if you don’t have one a bag of basmati tipped into an old sock and microwaved does the same thing.

BunsOfAnarchy · 31/03/2019 07:57

You have my sympathies, this is so weird because i almost wrote pretty much the exact same aibu last week!
Im on day 17. It's only just subsiding.
Nothing, NOTHING fucking works.
My go to painkiller (co codamol) for the first time has made ZERO difference.
I went and got seen by a doctor who picked up tonsilitis and gave me penicillin. Full course done...little difference made. Neti potted my nose. Nothing.

I'm now living on ibuprofen. 4x a day. It does make it more manageable. It's the only thing that takes that pressure pain away enough to make u carry on working.

BunsOfAnarchy · 31/03/2019 08:00

Oh also, to add, my boogers were almost bright yellow!
Decongestant didnt work at all for me. Sterimar was good for clearing bogeys but did nothing to relieve pressure for me.

BoobiesToTheRescue · 31/03/2019 08:03

I've just got over this. I had added vertigo as well. It was like I was stood on a rug and someone was pulling it a few inches every now and then. Fucking horrible.

Mine lasted a week, it's absolutely rotten you have my sympathies.

BoobiesToTheRescue · 31/03/2019 08:04

And yes as BunsofAnarchy said, I too relied on ibuprofen.

LakieLady · 31/03/2019 08:06

I find Boots own brand decongestants work better than Sudafed and they're cheaper. I get the ones without pain relief, so I can take my own choice of painkiller (co-codamol, usually).

That and the spray should help, if not it's off to the docs. DP got some magic spray that was only available on prescription and it worked in less than 24 hours.

ItsHardToExplain · 31/03/2019 08:08

Definitely try a neti pot. Disgusting but it works.
Also try a vibrator if you have one. It will loosen it all up and get it out.

ItsHardToExplain · 31/03/2019 08:08

^ on your nose and near your eyebrows Grin

Beetlewing · 31/03/2019 08:12

Boots brand decongestants. The ones with pseudoephedrine NOT Sudafed which are ineffective. It's like running a tap 😁

Wolfcub · 31/03/2019 08:12

I second the no dairy recommendations and the nasal rinse/nasal wash spray. Sudafed and antihistamines and warm things on your face and massage your sinuses. Also gargling morning and night with water to help move the mucus that sits at the back of your throat.
It is bloody grim.

Shortandsweet96 · 31/03/2019 08:12

I am forever battling my sinuses, they hate me

Try a nasal stick sniff thingy.

Hot bath or shower is great, the steam loosens the gunk in your sinuses and relieves the pressure

Ringsender2 · 31/03/2019 08:15

You might feel too ropey to do this, but swimming down to the bottom of the deep end of the swimming pool works a bit.

It's uncomfortable while going down, but the additional external water pressure does squeeze a lot of snot out.

FreeButtonBee · 31/03/2019 08:16

It’s horrible. I find sinutab better than Sudfed - but it has paracetamol in it so do be careful with dosage. But nice balm tissues as once it starts running your nose will be in Ribbons. And keep alternating painkiller religiously through the day once you find a combo that works. It’s harder to get on top of if it starts hurting again. It sucks!

The steam/sterilise/nasal rinses all help but only drugs actually take away the pain

Pk37 · 31/03/2019 08:17

I get this all the time .
The worst was when the infection got into the sinuses at the back of my skull.
Never felt anything like it , it was horrendous.
First thing I do it nasal spray to unblock and ibuprofen then later a neti pot filled with a sea salt ,bicarb and warm boiled water .
It feels so good when it shifts stuff !

Pk37 · 31/03/2019 08:18

Posted too soon..
If it’s still really bad then I go to gp for antibiotics

candlefloozy · 31/03/2019 08:19

I take sinutab. But during really bad bouts I go to the doctors and get anti biotics. That's only happened twice and I get it several times a year. I also used to use my cup of tea and rub it across my cheeks going towards my nose. This used to force snot out.

redwoodmazza · 31/03/2019 08:20

I had this once and my doctor explained that the sinuses are sort of the wrong way up and to try and drain them, you should turn your head upside-down!!!

faeveren · 31/03/2019 08:20

I used to suffer badly and use a netti pot, messy but helps. However everything only helps temporarily. Agree with the person who said bend head forward and massage, if you place your fingers underneath your eye sockets and gently push you will feel and possibly hear the crackling. Have you googled sinuses so that you are massaging the right places?

Also bend at the waist, head horizontal when you blow your nose, I’m convinced having your head lower helps clear the sinuses from within and not just the nose. Always gets way more out and check the colour. Anti inflammatories for the pain and a trip to the GP if it’s prolonged.

Notastepparentbut · 31/03/2019 08:21

Sinusitis pain is the worst.
Echoing everyone else. Doc for antibiotics.

Steam your head - vick in a bowl of water, towel over ur head.

Decongestants and a,ternate Brufen and paracetamol.

Sympathies.

brummiesue · 31/03/2019 08:23

Going swimming while streaming snot?? How delightful for others in the poolHmm
You have my sympathy, I had it while pregnant, pain was excruciating

faeveren · 31/03/2019 08:23

Crosspost with Redwood I always blow my nose upside down it is definitely easier.

MissHemsworth · 31/03/2019 08:23

You need a nasal spray with steroids in it. You can get it over the counter from a pharmacist. It an take a few days to start working but if you're anything like me the sinus infections go on for weeks & weeks anyway!

Also regular Ibruprofen & lots of steam.

Sunshinegirl82 · 31/03/2019 08:24

Try putting olbas oil in a bowl of hot water and inhaling the steam with a towel over your head, I find that works best for me at loosening things up. Do it a few times a day if you can, once you can get some of the gunk out it will feel a bit better.

You have my sympathy, sinusitis is rough. I hope you feel better soon.
