WIBU? Asked fellow customer to turn down the music on her phone in a busy coffee shop

Its a busy coffee shop with a chilled atmosphere and background classical music

Lady at next table was playing music loudly on her phone.

I said "excuse me, your music is quite disturbing" before I went any further she nodded and turned it off. I apologised and got back to my coffee.

But I got some filthy looks from other customers. Was I rude?

Earphones were made for people that want to listen to music in public, anyone not using them is quite honestly an A hole.

badlydrawnperson - I had this the other day with a woman on the bus I was on who got on - loud music playing right through her headphones and she was standing right next to me. I didn't want to get into an argument or ask her to turn it down but when she left the bus I was pleased with the silence!

Cheek of pound shop Katie Price on your train to scowl at you as your phone speaker sound played accidentally!

It's at times like this (would never do it) that I wished I carried and used a small pair of scissors in my bag to cut the cords! London Buses used to have 'considerate passengers adverts' one had a young man with headphones playing loud but not seen those in ages...

No you weren't unreasonable to ask her to turn it down.

I think she responded decently to be fair though.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/03/2019 11:16

I quite often say to people “excuse me, could you please use headphones / turn down your music?” And no one has ever scowled / tutted at me

I do it if people are using headphones and I can hear their music blaring out too 🤷🏼‍♀️

Noisy fuckers.

SparklyLeprechaun · 29/03/2019 11:56

I very much doubt other customers were directing dirty looks at you. The woman responded nicely, job done, move on.

MadameDD · 29/03/2019 11:56

ShirleyPhallus - I need to get some guts to do this too - re the headphones blaring out!

I do honestly think a lot of people (apart from those with the proper Beats style whole ear cover headphones) simply can't hear how loud their music sounds externally.

Another peeve of mine - on train the other day, man sitting next to me wants to get out of his seat and train, wearing big ear covering headphones, doesn't say 'excuse me' 'thank you' or anything, just expected me get to up (as I couldn't just move my legs) and barged past me - he was also a man in I'd guess 30's, smart-casual looking. I did snarl very PA at him as he got off 'it's ok, don't say excuse me or thank you!' and felt slightly better for doing so. Strangely enough I often find nowadays younger people are far more polite than some of their older peers.

Madame I not infrequently will brightly say something like "oh, if you'd just asked I would have moved straightaway!"

There's not much they can say back to that really.
