Urgent - can anyone help me to save DDs hamster?

Our hamster is only ten months old. Just went to get her out and she's laying on her tummy, whiskers are twitching and eyes are moving but her legs are flat out and she has a bump along her spine Sad She won't go in her wheel so she hasn't injured herself on there, could she have hurt herself climbing the bars in her cage and falling off? Is there anything I can do to help her? (Besides the vet tonight preferably I'm a lone parent and the DC have just gone to bed)

Did you get hold of a vet?

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 28/03/2019 21:54

What did the vet advise when you called earlier?

OytheBumbler · 28/03/2019 21:55

Has she tried to move around?

hammeringinmyhead · 28/03/2019 22:03

It may not be an injury. I have had several rats that had strokes and lost the use of their back legs.

mummymayhem18 · 28/03/2019 22:04

Take the poor thing to a vets ASAP. Sorry though 😢

MyKingdomForBrie · 28/03/2019 22:06

You can't leave her like this all night. Someone needs to get her to emergency vet.

HipHipHippoo · 28/03/2019 22:06

Too late for a vet by the time I got through Sad DD is going to be absolutely devastated. Hell, I'm devastated.

@HipHipHippoo it's dead then I take it?

Did anyone handle it today?

Divgirl2 · 28/03/2019 22:07

You can't just leave the poor thing to suffer, find an emergency vet.

speakout · 28/03/2019 22:08

Is the hamster dead OP?

Sorry do you mean the hamster has died already or that there were no vets available?

LellowYedbetter · 28/03/2019 22:10

It’s obviously dead

Just be sure its definitely dead is all I am saying. Sorry again.

@HipHipHippoo that's so sad, I'm sorry.ThanksI have a one eyed hamster (she's really cute! Like a little pirate) and I'd hate to see her go)Sad

ohfourfoxache · 28/03/2019 22:42

Oh I’m so sorry Sad

HipHipHippoo · 28/03/2019 22:50

Thank you

Do you think it could have happened when she escaped weeks ago even though she's been fine since?

OP posts:
Divgirl2 · 28/03/2019 22:54

I seriously doubt it. Little animals systems are very "sped up" compared to ours so if he was injured weeks ago I'd have expected it to have kicked in before now.

It's more likely something has happened tonight.

It could be any number of things and as hamsters are prey animals they're very good at hiding illness and injury until it becomes too serious to hide it because illness/injury = easy pickings for predators.

Could she have eaten something she shouldn't have? What sort of bedding do you have? If it's the fluffy stuff, hamsters can sometimes eat this and cause an internal blockage. It could have been a stroke or tumour, even a bacterial infection.

These things happen, poor hammy isn't in any pain now though Flowers

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 28/03/2019 23:28

I would say someone may have handed her when you were not looking but, if you have small kids it is not difficult for an accident to happen, someone trying to grab the hamster when they are trying to run may be enough.
