To be irritated by exclamation marks?

I'm all for an explanation mark when it's called for but when they are used as a full stop replacement in a paragraph of text, it really winds me up Grin My brain reads each sentence with an upward inflection at the end and I mostly give up reading it all.

AIBU or are there other grammar nerds out there?

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheGoogleMum · 28/03/2019 13:00

I probably overuse them a bit. Sorry! ;)

AdaColeman · 28/03/2019 13:06

I'm liking explanation mark.
Surely it's a question mark that makes that voice in your head go up at the end of sentences?

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2019 13:08

I use them too much ; I should stop.

Chocrock · 28/03/2019 13:17

I totally agree. It doesn't make sense to me. Is it an attempt to make text seem more interesting?

Amongstthetallgrass · 28/03/2019 13:19

My DH does it all the time. It annoys me and makes me think he is illiterate

SilverySurfer · 28/03/2019 13:19

No! Surely not! Grin

Hazeintheclouds · 28/03/2019 13:20

Explanation mark? What is that?

Hazeintheclouds · 28/03/2019 13:22

The question mark is what might result in the Aussie style upwards inflection. Some people have adopted that style even when making statements, however. Confused

Worlds0kayestmum · 28/03/2019 14:03

Exclamation point, my apologies Grin

Less an upwards inflection then and more a REALLY EXCITED VOICE. It definitely changes the way I read something. I think it's a habit some people have fallen into! They probably don't even realise! But it seems totally unnecessary to me! It makes everything seem a little bit shouty!

Do you really 'hear' each word aloud in your head when reading? That's so weird - I have never thought about it before, but I definitely don't and now I'm wondering which is more common.

Where do you come across all these exclamation marks? Presumably if they make you give up reading, the material is probably not your preferred style anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it and don't worry about being a grammar nerd either - struggling with a particular style of writing doesn't make you a nerd!

Definitelysometime · 28/03/2019 19:43

YANBU. I manage a content team and spend half my day replacing the horrible, shouty exclamation mark with the trusty full stop. No need! (Except occasionally Wink)

brizzlemint · 28/03/2019 19:49

Wow! I'm impressed that you took the time to write this Awesome!
post. Hey! I wish I'd written it, I'd go Whoopee! with joy and jump with delight until, Ouch! Bam! and I'd bang my head as I leapt up. However, Hooray! it's Unbelievable! Tremendous! and Super! Gosh! Would you believe that despite the bump and Crash! and loud Kaboom! I hadn't done myself a nasty injury, Jeepers Creepers! I was lucky, though I did say Drat! Yikes! and Uh oh!

Well, sorry for that little interjection, I'll leave you to it!

Bigonesmallone3 · 28/03/2019 19:55

I'm an offender!

Wow(!) So what happens to the words? Do they just land silently in your head and their meaning unfolds?
I’m going intrigued @CharityConundrum can you please xplain more please?

Ohyesiam · 28/03/2019 20:00

Explain

Rarotonga · 28/03/2019 20:19

I get grumpy about exclamation marks when people are sending condolences following a death. Just, no.

longwayoff · 28/03/2019 20:30

Brizzle!!!Grin

brizzlemint · 28/03/2019 20:38

Brizzle!!!grin

You called???!!!!!!

dayswithaY · 28/03/2019 20:46

I used an exclamation mark in a text message and the person told me I had upset them as they took it as a sign of aggression. Who knew they were so powerful?

VanillaBlossom · 29/03/2019 00:20

I use them when I'm excitable and to liven up the conversation 🤔 I hope I'm not seen as aggressive!!!! 😁

Ihatehashtags · 29/03/2019 05:17

I’m irritated that they irritate you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XiCi · 29/03/2019 05:55

I find this so bizarre. I can't even imagine an alternative to 'hearing' the words when you read them.

yearinyearout · 29/03/2019 06:01

YANBU. My dm uses them constantly and it drives me nuts, feel like she's always shouting at me. She doesn't even just use one at a time, it's !!!!

pink412 · 29/03/2019 06:03

Yes! Used! Far! To! Many! Times! I! Think!
