Punctuation

Is it just me being an old fart or do others hate posts where there is no punctuation or poor punctuation. I end up having to reread things several times to understand what people are trying to communicate. I know tech-talk tends to be abbreviated and speedy but surely it's reasonable to expect at least enough punctuation to make the post legible.

These threads are as bad as fat shaming.
Shaming people for not having a proper education, I mean it is free. How naive
I had dcd dyslexic in school undiagnosed for years, other DC were to hungry to concentrate, or busy wondering about their fuck up home life, some areas for DC are about survival, avoiding drug addiction, gangs, the wrong crowd.
Circumstances mean everything.

What’s tech-talk?

I don't think there's a badge of pride for ignoring SPAG, I just think it's unnecessary to point out out to people.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/03/2019 13:09

If it is pointed out negatively on an internet forum, it is tacky.
It is used as an insult to make the poster feel inferior.

There is no reason to feel as though you have to read any thread - if it's too hard for you to make sense of because you struggle with non-standard communication, then I'm sure most OP's won't mind you not responding.

Those who are overwhelmed, in distress, visually impaired, struggling with SEN, typing in their second language or don't manage to produce an OP that is universally understood for any other reason, would probably rather solicit support from those who are able to understand their posts and ask pertinent questions to clarify anything that's not obvious from the OP rather than taking up the time of others who struggle themselves.

Don't feel obliged to respond to everyone - you can only do so much and there will usually be someone else along who can make sense of it - I'm often impressed by the comprehension skills and kindness of those on MN who put time into helping even those who may take a little more effort than others.

I’m a complete SPAG pedant. I noticed with horror this morning that I’d misused an apostrophe. But while I’m happy to cut Internet posters a bit of slack, I sometimes open threads, see a huge slab of unpunctuated text and think “Oh, fuck it - life’s too short”.
