To think the doctor shouldn't refuse me my medication?

Hi,I've been a long time sufferer of anxiety for over 10 years.
A lot better now but still really anxious before a big event or a event that's out of my comfort zone.
My doctor prescribed me diazepam 2 years ago (28 tablets ) and they've just ran out.
Went to GP today and said no ..and offered me anti depressants.
I refused and left with nothing.
I use half a tablet before a big event etc hence why they lasted 2 years
Now I have things coming up this year and I'm going to have to cancel now.
Aibu to think this isn't ok?

@TheOrigFV45 I was thinking the exact same thing!

lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:46

@LaBelleSauvage I don't take it every month.
July last year ..I had to go to my sisters wedding as bridesmaid
I took 1 the night before ,1 on the morning and one as the wedding started
Then none for months.

Look you asked and you've had advice from people including healthcare professionals. I'm not sure what else you want to gain from his.

swingofthings · 27/03/2019 17:46

This whole valium is so bad for you mania is ridiculous. Yes it is addictive and yes, sadly, some people hsve become addicted to it. However the vast majority of people who are prescribed low doses for specific event are jot even ckosectobehstcyou could refer to addiction.

It really annoys me when there are millions of people now addicted to coffee to function daily and that dose of coffee has much negative effect on one's heart than a few valiums there and then, but hey go, it's the medical fashion of this year, bad bad valium and everyone relying on it is just sad!

NoSquirrels · 27/03/2019 17:46

My GP is happy to prescribe Diazepam for me (5mg) perhaps once a year when my anxiety is really bad

This is different to getting a stash to use over the long-term, though.

If the OP has asked for 1/2 tablets to see her through fear of flying it likely would have been treated differently.

The operation anxiety she’d have been referred back to the consultant, probably.

If you have to book a separate appointment each time to ask for the prescription you are a) less likely to abuse it and b) a pattern will emerge which may point to other avenues of treatment.

pootyisabadcat · 27/03/2019 17:47

So your options are to find another GP or source street blues or weed. I'm not really sure what else there is if CBT doesn't work and you don't want ADs (I understand why).

Sirzy · 27/03/2019 17:48

It is a lot though if that is now your go to strategy which it sounds like it is. You seem unwilling to try anything else to deal with moments of anxiety and think this is the only option - with a drug like this that isn’t healthy.

lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:48

@Prequelle yes I did ask
But all the ridiculous theories is a bit silly
I don't need a full time medication
I need something to help with my anxiety before anxiety producing events (whenever that may be )

OP posts:
Prequelle · 27/03/2019 17:48

Okay, I'm not sure AIBU was the place to post as you won't accept you're wrong.

lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:49

@NoSquirrels how is that different ?
She doesn't say how many tablets she was prescribed or when she takes them.
I'm prescribed them once every 2 years
How is that different ?

OP posts:
lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:49

@Prequelle I don't think I'm wrong

OP posts:
lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:50

@Sirzy I've tried other things
Cbt
Valerian root tea
Hypnotherapy

The way that you are using diazepam does not fit in with NICE guidelines for treating generalised anxiety disorder. Your GP is being a responsible prescriber. Were you to ask for a one off dose for a specific event the guidelines would allow your GP to prescribe for this eventuality. Diazepam is addictive and commonly abused, although this doesn't appear to apply to you it does mean it has clear prescribing guidelines. I understand your frustration but ideally you would find a long term solution to your occasional anxiety that didn't involve taking diazepam.

NoSquirrels · 27/03/2019 17:51

No one is giving ridiculous theories.

You seem really resistant to even considering that this pattern of usage is problematic. And that will be if concern to the GP too.

I’d make another appointment, and ask for 1 or 2 tablets explaining what the specific event is you need them for.

AhhhHereItGoes · 27/03/2019 17:51

I think you're lucky you get an effect with 2mg.

At 4mg I may feel slightly better but it takes 6mg to have a real effect.

I'm onSertealind and I get why you don't want to have a permenant drug in your system and it seems you're sensitive to medication.

Could you try a private prescription website like Doctor-4-u or push doctor.

NorthEndGal · 27/03/2019 17:51

Can you see it is worry to your doctor when you say there is one one possible thing that can help you, and you are not prepared to keep trying other things?

Motheroffeminists · 27/03/2019 17:51

This thread is rather familiar. The OP, the replies, the updates. All very similar to one a few weeks back where OP was told she was bu and had she tried x,y,z and op dismissed ALL alternatives.

NorthEndGal · 27/03/2019 17:51

Only one*

pisspawpatrol · 27/03/2019 17:52

You're dismissing most suggestions out of hand without trying the alternatives.

Anti-depressants are not poison and they don't all have the same side effects. I took citalopram to begin with and it made me feel nauseous and didn't stabilise me as much as I wanted, so I changed to Escitalopram (very similar active ingredient) and it works amazingly for me.

There are more than one type of anti-depressants, more than one type of beta blockers, and more than one type of talking therapy. Try looking at the Mind website for more information about different treatments.

Just because CBT hasn't worked doesn't mean that CFT, EMDR or psychotherapy might not work!

lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:52

@NoSquirrels how is it problematic?
Surely if I was taking it daily for years then it's a problem
But 3 one month then none for months surely isn't dangerous to me.

OP posts:
Prequelle · 27/03/2019 17:52

lisa so if you were never open to being anything but right, why post here.

lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:53

@pisspawpatrol it's not so easy to get lots of different therapies on nhs.
I waited 8 months just for my CBT
I've tried hypnotherapy,valerian tea etc and I didn't notice a change

OP posts:
lisaboob · 27/03/2019 17:53

@Prequelle my aibu was about the doctor refusing to prescribe medication
Not about the dosage etc

OP posts:
Reters · 27/03/2019 17:54

You can have up to 30mg a day for Anxiety, as you have 1mg what about trying Valerian or something similar?

It might be worth a try OP.
Anxiety is horrible.

Prequelle · 27/03/2019 17:54

And you've been told they weren't unreasonable but you still won't accept it.
