So was planning to return to work, been offered p/t role of 12 hours a week, 2 DC at middle school, really disappointed to gather that as due to hours I will only be able to keep the first £20 of my wages, the rest will be replaced by benefits, I can't believe I will actually be worse off as fuel will cost more than £20 to get there!

I had heard about people complaining they couldn't afford to go back work, now I know why!

Can you work another four hours? If you do, you could get working tax credits so would be much better off.

This type of thing was what forced me to become an SAHM for years. It wasn't through choice.

Although I did regularly look for work, and did get the odd offer of suitable part time jobs, I was not able to take any of them up for exactly the reason you describe.

The shackles didn't finally come off me until my youngest was nearing secondary school age and I would no longer have to factor in childcare costs.

I have been back at work five mornings a week for five years now, often working from home. I am much happier, though it has severely dented my earning capacity etc. If I get the chance I will increase my hours.

I'm in the same boat. Had our first DC in January, and looking at all the figures regarding childcare, I'll be worse off working Angry So I'm now a SAHM. Gives me more time to check on Mumsnet at least Grin

Possibly Jo bit that would take me into UC territory which is pretty scary given all the horror stories I've heard...!
