Renting decor

AIBU to think the decor in rented properties should generally be more neutral?

I’m looking at move to another area (renting). I’ve spent the last couple of months perusing every single property website looking for a nice, 2 bedroom house. One thing that seems to appear in nearly every property (that immediately puts me off a property), is very strong statement walls, deep colours, and otherwise naff effect wallpaper (think brick effect or black). The rooms themselves would otherwise be lovely, if they were more neutral and soft.

I understand that people have different tastes and each to their own. But surely it makes more sense for the landlord to decorate a let property in neutral tones? It would then appeal to more prospective tenants, who would want their furniture to match.

Could just be me!

Could have been owned before or rented by long term tenants

When we bought ours we neutralized the kids bedrooms which were gender painted but we left the very nice in our opinion statement walls in the living room and dining room. When we redecorate we will do so neutrally.

And it also depends on the area I suppose. If there is no shortage of renters them LL don't need to decorate to attract more prospective tenants.

YANBU.

I'll never understand it, landlords are lazy and money grabbing in my experience but for the most part they'd probably rent easier and potentially for more money if they just redecorated

Thank you for your replies.

I suppose if there’s a high demand for rented properties, than less needs to be done. I can put up with some paint/wallpaper, but when it’s black or deep red... it’s a no! Grin

Isn’t the general rule that, a tenant can’t re-paint a property unless agreed by the landlord? If I were allowed to re-decorate, then I’d probably reconsider if I liked the property enough. Think I’d be doing some of them a favour by re-decorating anyway! Wink

YANBU. I've also noticed it, we have asked LLs or letting agents in the past whether the walls will be painted before we move in which it sometimes is. Or whether we can paint it in neutral colours, great old magnolia. Which has also been ok. The LL where we are at the moment is happy for us to do whatever so don't let the picyures put you off.

My experience has been the opposite - everywhere I've ever rented, bar one house as a student, has been neutral. Magnolia. Always magnolia. I am SO sick of magnolia.

Worth enquiring if they would let you redecorate - it might be that they are chilled about it and the previous tenants were long-term and had decorated to their own tastes.
