To be worried?

Sorry, it's another Brexit thread!
I'm not very politically minded, a lot of it goes over my head. If I'm honest, I try not to engage in conversations involving politics. I respect that people vote different to me and I leave it at that.

But the closer we get to Friday, I find myself worrying. Am I being naive in hoping it won't be that bad if we leave? I just have this guy wrenching fear of not being able to feed my LO if food shortages happen or riots starting in the streets. I'm terrified. AIBU for feeling this way?

Tomorrow id go to aldi and buy loads of pasta + frozen veg + cheese, if your lo is big enough for t that. At least you will know you have the basics at home so you won't be thinking of going out Just in case. Like when a big snow happens , give yourself a few days buffer.

Politically it's hard to know what will happen. Socially and economically too.

But just the act of feathering your nest is soothing. (Within reason of course)

It seems that the next d-day is April 12th.

Try not to get consumed with worry, easy said I know.

GoosetheCat · 27/03/2019 01:03

Thanks for the reply!
My LO is still on formula, so it makes me worry I won't be able to get any if shortages happen. I may be being silly, as I do suffer with anxiety quite badly. My OH seems to think it's just my anxiety playing up and I'm jumping to conclusions that won't happen, but it actually keeps me up at night worrying Blush

OP posts:
7Days · 27/03/2019 01:25

I thought that about the anxiety. I have suffered bad enough in the past so I know what it is like.

It's a hard one. No one can ever tell you the future will be joyful and amazing. I spent a long time waiting for a guarantee, unbeknownst to myself.

But someone told me it's like driving at night. Your headlights only show you a few feet ahead, so you watch carefuly those few feet, and you get there in the end. Maybe a bit trite but it sunk in to me.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 27/03/2019 02:11

Yes, I do think you’re being silly to be at all worried. There won’t be riots, there won’t be food shortages. We’ll leave when we leave and be better off for it.

PregnantSea · 27/03/2019 02:24

I think the impact on people's day to day lives has been exaggerated by the media. I'm not saying everything will be hunky dory, but there will be food, there will be emergency services, and there will be medicine.

Stuff may become more expensive though depending on how things go, and although I don't expect one I suppose a riot isn't off the cards completely. So if you're anxious the best thing to do to ease that is just stock pile some baby formula and some other essentials - rice, dried beans, toothpaste, soap. It's not a waste because even if nothing happens you will still use all of that stuff eventually, and it will help you sleep better knowing you have it there and you can hide away in the house for a bit.

GoosetheCat · 27/03/2019 11:02

I've stocked up on some formula today. Just read an article stating that there could be a shortage of baby formula after Brexit. It's all so worrying!

You know we aren't leaving on Friday right?

GoosetheCat · 27/03/2019 11:08

I know, but I feel better having some in stock. I know is it sounds silly, I just don't deal well with change and constantly worry.

OP posts:
BrexitBingoGenerator · 27/03/2019 11:11

I’ve made a little stockpile of things that I like, OP- no idea as to when/if we would need it, but it feels good to be prepared.

To PP who are saying it is silly to worry and that we won’t be affected, i hope you’re right but am at a loss as to how you can be so confident! Confused

SoyDora · 27/03/2019 11:13

We’ll leave when we leave and be better off for it

How do you know we’ll be better off for it? Do you know something everyone else doesn’t?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 27/03/2019 11:14

There won’t be riots, there won’t be food shortages.

I'm amazed anyone can state either of these things as a fact. It's not silly to be worried about the impact of such a huge change in the status quo so I don't see how the OP can be seen as unreasonable.

My advise would be to get a few extra cartons of formula if you can afford to. Not because I am fear mongering but if the worst happens you will have a safety net and if nothing happens then you will use the formula any way so you have nothing to loose. Smile Try not to worry too much but don't ever think that it is unreasonable to worry.

Mookatron · 27/03/2019 11:14

I don't think you're being silly. People who say you're being silly are making a political statement about what they think will /won't happen. Its very patronising, which in itself is a political technique.

It is however pointless to worry about what you can't control. What you can control is having food in in case it turns out you do need it. Stock up on a few things you know you'll use anyway and you can stop worrying about what will happen if there are food shortages. The other stuff we're all dealing with the worry of (apart from those too stupid to think it will affect them) but we can't do much about it so we just need to distract ourselves.

Lots of supportive thoughts to everyone who needs them. Nobody's being silly. Flowers

We're going somewhere on Friday are we?

ElizabethMountbatten How can you be so sanguine with a name like that?

BlackSatinDancer · 27/03/2019 11:30

The goalposts have moved to April 12th haven't they?

I wish we were just walking away from the EU on Friday. Nothing really bad will happen if we have no deal. The country won't collapse. We won't stop trading with each other and there are other countries outside the EU waiting to put together trade deals with us for after we leave. The EU want us to buy their goods and they sell more to us than we do to them so they would still want to trade with us after we leave.

Please try not to worry. Maybe it would help if you didn't watch the news or read about Brexit and just focus on your family life.

SummerInSun · 27/03/2019 11:32

I'm another who thinks it will probably all be fine, other than a price hike or unavailability for a while of fresh imported produce, eg tomatoes. BUT, just in case I'm wrong about that, we have a stockpile of nappies, calpol and some tinned and dry goods. That way we don't have to worry. (Committed remainer, by the way, and think the country will be worse off, but even I don't believe we'll have food riots, etc.)

NameChanger22 · 27/03/2019 11:45

It is quite wise to prepare for price rises, unless you are really rich.

Mookatron · 27/03/2019 11:46

If you really are paying this little attention to the world around you I don't believe you want to leave the EU other than to be bloody minded.

Molewoman · 27/03/2019 11:57

mookatron is right. For your own peace of mind, build up a supply of formula/Calpol/disposable nappies, whatever you normally use, assuming you can afford a few extra of everything. I lived overseas while our DC were little and there were often unpredictable shortages, so I was always imaginatively prepared. It's about keeping yourself calm, you can't tidy the Brexit mess but you can concentrate on keeping your own circumstances stress-free. Flowers Smile

I've stocked up on some formula today. Just read an article stating that there could be a shortage of baby formula after Brexit. It's all so worrying!

Infant milk formula and children's vitamins are on the critical goods list for Government-secured freight capacity - to ensure that supplies are uninterrupted in the event of a 'no-deal'.

The Government has contracted 7 new ferry routes (away from Dover) and reserved air freight slots for these goods.

The Government has announced what will be considered ‘critical goods’ and therefore be eligible for government-secured freight capacity in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Specifically, for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), this includes:

•Human Medicines, covering Prescription-only, Pharmacy and General Sales List Medicines, clinical trials and children’s vitamins (for import and export)
•Medical Devices and Clinical Consumables, considered to be Category 1 (for import and export)
•Vaccines (for import only)
•Nutritional Specialist Feeds, including Infant Milk Formula (for import only)
•Biological materials such as blood, organs, tissues and cells (for import only)

@clavinova thank you so much for that, it has helped reduce the knot in my stomach significantly!

Thank you all for your replies. I know it's a daunting time for everyone. I just hope that the divide in the country lessens and we can all move forward by helping each other Flowers
