It is possible to see the sense in making a business decision which saves money in the long term without “sticking up for” the person who happened to be the one overseeing that particular decision.

The reason the US healthcare is used as an example so often is that it is very very expensive (US pays around 17% of it's GDP in healthcare costs, compared to UK 9% or France 11%) while by many measures (life expectant, infant mortality etc) they receive worse healthcare.

Worse the money motivation for healthcare professionals suggests that patients are put at risk, just look at the opioid epidemic in the US, where pharmaceutical companies lobbied the Food and Drug Administration to allow their highly addictive powerful morphine based pain killers.

We really don't want to go down the US healthcare route.

I am sure that renting out big corporate spaces on an event by event basis would cost less.

I know a little about the world of Diplomacy, and I'm aware that the UK has a whole range of properties around the world to entertain guests an dignitaries. I'm afraid it's part of how the world works. If you meet a UK ambassador anywhere, they're likely to have somewhere nice to live. There is a need to entertain people in the evening. New York is an expensive city, and while I haven't seen the business case, it doesn't seem entirely illogical

The lease of the current US embassy in London was reported to have cost £500 million! You might want to have a walk around Mayfair and surrounding areas of London and have a peak at the foreign embassies. £12 million is peanuts compared to the value of some of them!

US healthcare companies and lobbyists are vultures. I'm sure they have a spare office building or two to host politicians in while they dish out bribes and draw up contracts in their favour, because we all know what's really going to happen. 🤪

If you look at the cost of buildings and lodgings near Westminster in the Americans Ambassadors mansion with huge grounds in Regents Park it is most probably a drop in the ocean in comparison. One might even ask the same question, why does he and his family need a house with so many rooms? Having been there I would say anything elsejust won’t cut the mustard and one would be the laughing stock of the world attempting to hold events and parties in anything else. I think people need to work up and realise the Middle East, Far East and China capitals are light years ahead and if you’re in any doubt a tour of the world would soon enlighten. I’m not saying that it’s nice to hear of such spending but Joe public as we are it is what it is.
To add these rooms are for family, staff, aides and space for entertaining visitors and parties and important meetings. The days are filled with work and schmoozing.

I agree with you moon2. I think people fail to understand that the world is globalised these days. They need to get out and see the world. Far too many people live their whole lives in their small post industrial town and don't realise for the UK to continue with the level of wealth we're at or improve we need to look outside.
