To have bought myself a Macbook Air old model? So stressed, almost in tears

Very, very stressed and anxious - mostly from far too little sleep but that's life.

Had a gift voucher for Apple for £250. I'm a student at the moment so get a student discount. Basically this means I was able to get a Macbook Air but the old version, just spending about £600. Needed a new computer, this was just about affordable, the newer models looked good but too fancy for my needs and couldn't justify the cost.

However then I read that actually the model is really the same as the one that came out in 2015 so that makes it old by laptop standards. Now worried I have wasted £600 and should have waited to save up for the later model?

Should I return it to the Apple store? I haven't even set it up yet.
Is it likely to be obsolete in a couple of years? The whole reason for getting a Macbook is everyone says they go on for years.

Just the worry of making the wrong decision when it's a big chunk of money (to me) kills me, thought I was making a good choice and now stressing I've been ripped off.

I’ve still got the first air from wind ago and I still use it
Watch me curse it now
Confused

Wind?

I meant ages

septembersunshine · 27/03/2019 16:14

Op if you feel you made an error take the whole thing back to Apple and it explain it to them. Maybe they can alleviate your worrys.

OrangeSamphire · 27/03/2019 16:18

Do not worry OP! I have a 2011 MacBook Air and a 2017 MacBook Pro. For day to day use they really aren’t that different. If most of what you do is using it for online research and preparing course documents you won’t notice the difference.

If on the other hand you do a lot of video editing, you will want the most up to date machine you can afford, and a Pro would be a necessity.

Up until last year I had a 2008 MacBook Pro. I only replaced it because DS kindly prized off the A key and ate part of it (I know!!!). It would no longer run things like Photoshop, but was totally fine for general internet, word processing etc. So we got 10 years out of that and it was still okay, just a bit slow, but only in the last year or so. The missing A key was the end of the road for it really.

Anyhow, I'm now rocking a mid-2014 MacBook Pro. Runs Photoshop fine for me (only basic photo editing needed), honestly it'll keep going for years and years.

2009 MacBook Pro here. Fine and dandy.

bliminy · 27/03/2019 16:53

I just had a meeting with my magazine and internet team, and the only people who couldn't get their Macs to work were the people with the brand new Macbook Pros.

Our tech guy said he's about to replace his new Pro with an older one so he can have his USB slots back. Crazy.

DerelictWreck · 27/03/2019 17:00

Am I the only one curious about the price? They were only £850 when they came out!

RedRiverShore · 27/03/2019 17:12

Is it a 2015 one or is it more recent with the same innards as a 2015 one, sometimes computers are only updated cosmeticly but have the older chip and stuff in them to make them cheaper but still new.

CookPassBabtridge · 27/03/2019 17:19

Ours is from 2013 and is quick as anything, I always forget how old it is and still think of it as our new macbook. I could never go back to windows.

ScreamingValenta · 27/03/2019 17:24

The later Mac models don't have standard USB sockets, which is a PITA as you have to buy an adaptor.

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/03/2019 17:24

They are complete workhorses so don't worry! I have 2013 retina pro and a MacBook Air, I don't think I'll ever buy new again...

RedRiverShore · 27/03/2019 17:29

I only got rid of my 2009 white MacBook one last year - a very sad day I add. I had put a new battery in it and upgraded the memory but in the end it kept having Kernel Panics and sadly had to go.

MrsPnut · 27/03/2019 19:18

We have a 2015 MacBook air and iMac and they are both working brilliantly.

bliminy · 27/03/2019 19:50

I just looked and my iMac is also 2015. Goes like shit off a shiny shovel.

florence11 · 27/03/2019 19:54

Mine is 2012 and as fast as the day I got it. Macs are not like Windows and more do they become as obsolete as iPhones Smile

shitpark · 27/03/2019 20:10

I have a 2015 MacBook and it is fine. Don't worry about it

chipsandpeas · 27/03/2019 20:38

i bought a refurb 2015 macbook air last year and it runs perfectly

nos123 · 27/03/2019 20:42

My Mac was toast after nearly 3 years. They are a waste of money.
