Apple Watch or Fitbit Charge 3?

Onynx · 25/03/2019 07:34

I went to buy a Fitbit Charge 3 today and the sales guy totally put me off it๐Ÿ™ˆ He said they are not accurate and he couldn't recommend it because if you swing your arm vigorously but don't take a step it still gets counted as a step๏ฟผ He was pushing me towards a Garmin but I have tiny wrists and I can't see myself wearing one of those- they are (IMO) not as nice looking. He also highly recommended the Apple Watch but again those were far more expensive. So I'm back to square one and as confused as ever.... Can anybody advise if it's worth splashing out on the Apple Watch?

Oh heck. Im looking at a Charge 3. I really dont like Apple and want ti be able to sync my phone/watch etc so wouldnt get apple ...

I do keep looking at others but also dont want clunky. I wondered about the new inspireHR but preferred the charge 3 and cant remember why!

Was he just upselling for a sale maybe?

WontYouDance · 25/03/2019 07:40

I would say yes. Iโ€™m on my second now, first was a series 2 Nike edition, now on a series 4 I got for Christmas. DP bought me both, id never pay that myself for a watch!

Only really worth it if you have an iPhone obviously.

It basically does pretty much everything an iPhone would do, but on your wrist. Series 4 comes in both cellular and non cellular versions, I have a non cellular but Iโ€™m never without my phone.

Depends though why you want one and what you need it for? Just for tracking exercise or does it need to be able to make calls, read emails etc?

I know vitality life insurance give them away with policies just now with incentives for keeping up with steps etc too

WontYouDance · 25/03/2019 07:42

DP has a Fitbit at one point, I think it might have been the charge actually. But heโ€™s a truck driver and when we was driving the watch was clocking up steps as he drove. Apparently an issue with them! I got him a Samsung gear sport instead which he has found a lot more reliable, and not as expensive as the other ones.

Rezie · 25/03/2019 07:42

I doubt any of those are accurate enough to know if you truly took a step. It's a thing on your wrist and it is taking the best guestimate. Depends what you want to use it for, I have a fitbit surge and it is accurate enough for my use. I use also the excercise modes there. I personally wouldn't be will g to spend money on Apple watch unless I wanted to use all the features in it.

I bought a Fitbit charge 3 and I really really
did not like it.

I have loved my charge 2 and was so excited but feel like they made it wildly over complicated for very little actual improved functionality and it didn't matter in the end because it packed up completely after only a couple of months. Having looked on online forums this is a disturbingly common problem. I am back to wearing my cracked Charge 2.

My DS got the Garmin foe Christmas and loves it...

Def don't get the Charge 3!!

WhyDoesItAlways · 25/03/2019 07:50

Have you looked at the Fitbit versa? It's more comparable to the Apple watch than the charge and much cheaper. I have one and love it.

I don't think there is such thing as an accurate fitness tracker. Because of the way they sensor movement they will always pick up steps if you move your arm in a particular way but equally can miss steps when you are walking, especially if you are pushing a trolley, pram etc...

sighrollseyes · 25/03/2019 07:55

I've had a Garmin for years - loved it. Only just changed to Apple Watch purely because it was bought for me as a gift.

Wintersnowdrop · 25/03/2019 07:57

I have a Fitbit Versa too, but not sure Iโ€™m getting the full benefit of it. What do you like about it @WhyDoesItAlways ? I use mine as a tracker and get text messages on it. Not really worked out music or the exercise coaching stuff. I like the fact that it shows all the data such as heart rate and stairs climbed etc.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2019 07:57

Think my dh has a polar fitness tracker and seems happy with it. I have the charge 2 and it's ok I suppose but doesn't always register steps or flights of stairs

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 25/03/2019 08:10

I want heart rate and steps and in an ideal world work when swimming.
Nudges to move if inactive are good.

Absolutely dont need texts/calls etc. I have a phone from that and think were too interconnected as it is!

WontYouDance · 25/03/2019 08:11

Apple Watch does all you just mentioned Swimming

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 25/03/2019 08:13

Ah yes, without buying apple as we dont have apple phones/tech etc. Not willing to spend hundreds extra!

Ihatehashtags · 25/03/2019 08:17

Well I had a Fitbit charge but I now have an Apple Watch. Much better. I use it for swimming. Itโ€™s waterp and has an inbuilt god which the charge does not. Depends what you want it for. If you are more fitnessy I go Garmin, if you want a bit of both Iโ€™d go the Apple Watch. I love mine!

Meercat2 · 25/03/2019 08:23

I posted a thread about this just before Christmas. I wanted to buy one for my DH as a present.
After a lot of time faffing around researching and reading reviews I decided on on the Apple watch. He doesn't usually wear a watch so I knew it was a risk. However, he has worn it every day since and he loves it.
I bought the Series 3 after reading a tech review saying it one of the more pointless upgrades and definitely not worth the ยฃ200+ extra.
It's a non-celluar but he uses so many of the functions as his phone is not far away. The GPS, email and text, music are great extras that he uses all the time.

geekone · 25/03/2019 08:27

The Garmin and the Apple Watch use the gps to accurately calibrate a step and distance so they are more accurate.

I have had both, I run, I liked both. The garmin though is great if you are just looking to track your fitness. The Apple Watch is awesome and does so much more.

I have a cellular Apple Watch series 4 and so far/:

I can make the face (mickey mouse) talk
I can track my heartbeat
I can receive a phone call
I can dictate a message

That's it.....

Onynx · 25/03/2019 09:32

That's it @geekone he was saying the Apple Watch measures the vibration through your body plus movement on GPS to determine that you've taken a step. For me- I'm surgically attached to my phone (iPhone 8), I have Spotify and I wanted something to measure steps most importantly but calories etc too. The Versa seems even bigger than the Apple Watch on my wrist.
