To request the next pay point for a Civil Service level transfer?

I'm currently a Civil Servant and have successfully applied for a role in another department. The new role is the same grade with a very slightly higher starting salary. However, the new role is more closely aligned to my professional qualifications. Has anyone successfully negotiated a higher starting salary in similar circumstances? Tia

I don’t know about civil but in NHS you cannot do this under agenda for change. You just have to accept the next pay point and can’t jump
Look online or your staff website for a policy?

Civil Service pay policy is well defined and a level transfer would see you stay on the same salary. If you are paid less than the new minimum you would move to that. The only difference is if you move to a specialist role which has an allowance which you qualify for. There is no harm in asking but expect to be told sorry no.

I've never had or seen a manager have the discretion in the civil service regarding pay points. It'll be done through central HR and it'll just be the higher out of your current salary and the minimum for that grade in that department

At least, I'll know I haven't lost out by not asking. Thanks for your responses .

@rumpus, @margarita is absolutely correct re policy, but I also wouldn’t ask either. I’ve seen it leave a poor first impression when the recruiting manager wants to take someone on, and may be sympathetic to their request, but is then battling HR on it. It can delay start dates, wouldn’t normally achieve anything, and if the LM isn’t sympathetic could just annoy them. (My advice on this would also differ depending on your grade though.) I’d be pleased that the new department’s starting salary is higher - so you’re getting a pay rise anyway!

@rumpusboo thanks you for asking the question that is currently on my mind. I was wondering how things went for you or if you got any clearer guidance? I am in exactly the same position now and seething that I will be potentially screwed over pay by CS.

@jellylegs7 Shortly before my previous department released me, a pay increase was implemented, so I started the new role earning £2k higher than others in my grade anyway :). However, before the pay increase was implemented, HR stated that they would pay the higher between my previous salary and the starting pay for my new role.

I’ve just been offered a role on the next grade so about to go through it all again. I hope it all works out for you xx

Thanks for replying. Sounds like a slightly different situation in that case. I joined when only the bottom salary of the grade was available, and am moving to another team in same department. The role is much more in tune with my previous 15 years experience and also seems to carry a lot more responsibility so I think I should be moved up the range in the current band.
Seriously peeved that they are saying that it can't be reviewed due to policy and questioning why move to a harder role for no benefit.
Not to mention remaining in the CS which such shite terms.
At least have job in current circumstances though....
