Neighbour using our recycling bin

Thankfuckitsfriday1 · 24/03/2019 14:02

Now i know this is a first world issue and not really a big deal.

But our neighbour has started using our recycling bin.
We’ve always had two and they’ve always had 1 and recently their one hasn’t been out so i’m not sure if it was pinched or what but it’s now only our two. And they have recently started using ours and we don’t really have the space for it. Both kids drink a huge amount of milk so that alone fills them up!

Today i went to put ours out and again it was filled with theirs so i took all theirs our, put it in a carrier bag and went to give it back to them but no answer so left it on their doorstop.

They don’t speak english so when i tried to tell them it fell on deaf ears unfortunately which also means they probably won’t know how to order another one... so i’m feeling a bit bad about it and annoyed.

We do now keep them in our back yard which is fenced off but last time after the recycling was collected they immediately put theirs in before i got home to put it back into a garden IYSWIM

Recycling bins are usually exempt from that. You can't have extra or larger general waste bins unless you're a family of 5, but the large recycling bins or an extra recycling bin is allowed for whatever size your family is.

@PeapodBurgundy Really? I just checked mine just in case and they do ask for lids to be separate but nothing about compress/not compress.
My council won’t accept the biodegradable plastic type food bags, only the paper ones.
It is very confusing when councils operate their policies very differently...

PeapodBurgundy · 24/03/2019 15:55

QuitMoaning Yup! Ridiculous isn't it! I discovered to my expense when I kicked off that my recycling hadn't been collected for the 3rd time on the trot (fortnightly collections). The environmental enforcement came out to inspect and told me that was the reason. His answer was 'it's policy', the customer service centre gave me the same answer, their Facebook page declined to comment. It's not so bad since I've moved, as this house has a bin rather than tubs (same council). Trying to cram everything except glass and paper/cardboard into one tub was fun alive (£36 for another tub, would only collect from their own tubs). It's utter madness!!

Preggosaurus9 · 24/03/2019 16:03

I also want to know if you wash and squash OP! Top tip. Rinse in hot water, makes them easier to squash!

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 24/03/2019 16:04

you're told not to compress cartons and bottles in our council

Really? I just checked mine just in case and they do ask for lids to be separate but nothing about compress/not compress

I just checked my council website and it says
Wash and squash items -This stops contamination, keeps your bin clean and saves space so you can recycle more!

So many different rules for the same result

PeapodBurgundy · 24/03/2019 16:36

I had a tin can crusher levery thing that I used to love as I have a lot of tins to recycle (2 cats), and it used to save so much space Hmm

Sweetpea55 · 24/03/2019 16:44

I caught my NDN shoving a bag full of rubbish into my bin at the dead of night. I got up early I took it out and left on the grass verge outside her house. Any bags not in bins didn't get taken so I think she learned her lesson

Hairyfairy01 · 24/03/2019 16:49

Maybe they think it is their bin and yours is the one that has gone missing?

Grace212 · 24/03/2019 16:49

how did the conversation go when you tried to speak to them?

SoupDragon · 24/03/2019 16:49

They are not free, you know.

When ours were crates rather than wheelie bins they were free.

Every council has a different system, it's nigh on impossible to make sweeping generalisations about the refuse collections. I get thoroughly confused by my mother's which has a completely different split of how the recycling should be sorted.

ElloBrian · 24/03/2019 16:54

Replacement bins are free in my council area.

FamilyOfAliens · 24/03/2019 17:25

My council doesn’t recycle tetrapack cartons at all, squashed or otherwise.

MadSweeney · 24/03/2019 17:29

Not free in my area, and I put in a bloody good argument for another bin (I was recycling more than my one small bin could cope with) and they still wanted to charge me £35.
I declined and it went into general waste instead.

Get a gravity bin lock.

Thankfuckitsfriday1 · 24/03/2019 17:32

okay so i’ll tey my best to answer..

we have numbers on them so definitely ours..

we of course we wash and squash, what would be the point of recycling otherwise as they’d be binned. ours are collected every 3 weeks and we go through a lot of cereal, milk etc

I have just ordered two more online but you have to put your own house number email and name and phone number... BUT i have tried to order more recycling twice in the past few years with no luck. They ARE free but because of that there’s a severe shortage and both times i’ve been told “i’ll get it when i get it”

We have been told in our area you have to wash and squash or it’s not collected

I'm not sure why people are saying order another time. Our council charges a decent chunk of change for a new bin.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/03/2019 06:59

It might help to paint your house number on the bin in huge bold bright colours. I had to do this with my wheelie bin in the UK because someone nicked borrowed it once. Found it, painted it, never happened again.
Lid and body of the bin so no excuse.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 25/03/2019 07:16

I would say in the spirit of sustainability get them sorted with a bin

SoupDragon · 25/03/2019 07:17

She's ordered two more.
