Family of 4- 2 adults and 2 DC under 7. We are thinking of moving into a tiny (old)cottage (TINY being that it is 5m x7m outside measurements) on our land while we build a new house. It needs work done first but we will do that new windows etc, so it will have a small living/kitchen/ dining (wall mounted folding table) and two bedrooms (bunk beds for DC) and a wet room, are we crazy!!?? It will be for max a year but it will save us A LOT in rent!! Would you do it??

Have you thought about a studybed? I'm about to get one, apparently George Clarke is a fan.

I think this sounds perfectly doable especially with an end date. You'll also be really well set up to not over clutter in the new 'big' house.

I lived in a tiny cottage for many years pre dc. There's a lot to be said for it.

Sounds exciting! So have you bought land with this cottage, and the plan is to move into it during the building so you're not paying mortgage AND rent?

hibbledibble · 24/03/2019 19:43

Absolutely fine. It's only temporary and you have lots of outdoor space.

If you look at YouTube there are lots of small home tours to give you ideas for layout and storage etc.

@Malope yes it has an acre with it. We were lucky to be able to buy it outright so no mortgage on it. We pay a lot of rent any the moment so yes we would rather not and save as much as we can for the build.

It'll be cramped but doable. You'll obviously have to seriously edit your stuff!

If you're going to have a table that folds down against the wall, get 4 folding garden chairs to use at the table, and fit hooks on the wall, to hang the chairs on when they're not being used. You can also then use them outside in the summer.

I would love to have a challenge like this!

Help the kids to build a den in the wooded area, and you'll hardly see them when the weather is good!
