Just wondered what these terms mean. I tried Googling and lots of different answers, but the term literary fiction rings kind of false to me - like it's muesli fiction, fiction that's good for you, whileas the books I enjoy aren't. I don't know. I do like some literary fiction I guess, it just feels like an odd divide and as though there is something standoffish there, iyswim.

For goodness sake, just read whatever takes your fancy and decide if you enjoy it or not based on your own opinion!

I often find that books that have won some sort of literary prize are dull as ditch water

Sadly this is my experience as well.

I also think certain types of Sci are much better at exploring ideas than literary fiction.

I also suspect it will be certain popular authors and books today that will stand test of time rather than literacy fiction as I've seen claimed.

There’s an awful lot of reverse snobbery on this page, and completely incorrect information on what literary fiction is. As a couple of others have mentioned it is usually more character driven rather than plot driven and it can explore things that fall outside of genre convention. Sometimes this means a book is more difficult but not always. There’s some great literary fiction out there. Why the hate?

YABU to say you don’t want to read literary novels and then go on to ask what the term means.
