To blame everyone else for this mess?

So about two years ago my boss messed everything up royally and decided to quit. A few of us decided to go for his job and in the end I got the position (technically on a default but never mind).
Anyway I needed to reunite my team. There are some very tricky characters in it, some who can have some very extreme views. I took lots of advice from my advisors and tried to work with those who had extreme views even though they were making impossible demands - but if I called them out on it they’d get rid of me and I am the only one sensible enough to hold it all together.
I unfortunately did make a big mistake about eight months in to my position which severely weakened my team.
My job requires a lot of negotiation which I accept isn’t my strong point. I have to negotiate with a very large organisation who weren’t always the easiest to deal with.
Anyway, roll on to this autumn and I finally have a plan in place for a very difficult decision that was made before I was in charge, but that I feel I have to act upon. However my team (and the members of several other teams we work with) have twice refused to accept it! They say I am not listening to them but I’m in charge and they don’t know what they want.
Anyway AIBU to blame them for this mess? My organisation could be in real trouble next week but I don’t think it’s my fault at all. What should I do? Should I resign? Keep going? Any advice gratefully received.

You were in charge. You needed to lead. To inspire people with ideas, to persuade them of the benefits of your plan. You needed to build consensus for your plan and negotiate the best deal.

Instead, you keep repeating the same old same old on an ever tiring loop.

You can’t lead your team within the conglomerate, how the fuck will you lead us as an independent entity (with no deal)?

If I were you I’d try hypnotising the nation by looking deep into their eyes and telling them how they think and feel.

Oh wait, you tried that last night.

Er

Maybe try turning it off and on again?

I think, as a very wise Mumsnetter once wrote, you should go to St Kilda and live with the fucking puffins.

You have a vagina... clearly you are the only one for the job... just refuse to make a deal if they're being unreasonable
