I have had an interview a couple of days ago. Today I got the email and was told I wasn't short listed for the final round.

They email is lovely and quite personal saying it was very hard decision but they only calling back 2 people and I just missed out on this one.

She mentioned she would want to keep me on their files in case any new opportunities come up.

What would you answer to an email like that ?

I would thank them for their reply, say it would be good to stay on their books, and ask if there is someone who could give you feedback from the interview.

Notageek · 21/03/2019 16:16

I’d just say Thank you, ask if they have any feedback for you and then say you’d be very interested in further opportunities.

MountPheasant · 21/03/2019 16:16

‘Thank you very much for your feedback, and for giving me the opportunity to come in and speak with you.

Please do keep me on file, and I look forward to the possibility of hearing from you in the future.’

I have in the past been rejected for two job offers, and both later contacted me to offer me the job. One I couldn't take because I was pregnant and couldn't face the commute, the second happened just weeks later and I took the job. Been here 16 years now!!

Say thanks and please let me know if anything cones up. They'll know you're keen then!

Thanks you very much for the opportunity. It’s was great to meet you, if you have some time I would really appreciate some feedback on my interview. Kind Regards

Yep I’d go with a version of the above. You never know.... good luck

I agree with PP's; they have gone a step further than letting you down gently. It sounds as if two people "ticked all the boxes" and there was, unfortunately, just one job going this time. But you made a good impression, and if they needed to find somebody suitable, they've already got all your details on file, plus a memo that you interviewed well - saves them starting from scratch!
My old school acquired a lovely member of staff that way; pipped at the post for one appointment, then another colleague handed in notice at the last minute. DBS check already done, lesson observation already done, interviews done, references already checked- win win!
