To ignore the midwives and go to the hospital?

I’m 39+2 weeks pregnant. The baby descended about two weeks ago and at my midwives appointment yesterday, they said the head was fully engaged and I was 20% effaced. Yesterday I think I lost my mucous plug (Sorry if TMI!) Gentle contractions started last night at 3:45am every 10 minutes or so. My contractions have now been every 5 minutes for a minute, for the last 5 hours. The problem is: They are deeply uncomfortable but not excruciatingly painful. I can still carry on with life despite them, although I’m pretty sure they aren’t Braxton Hicks as the pain crescendos then diminishes, and changing positions doesn’t help at all, nor does staying hydrated. They’re worse than period cramps, but they don’t make me wish for death (which is how I felt when labour was established with my DD!)

The midwives advised me to stay at home until I have a contraction that I can no longer talk through (or if my water breaks or there is bloody discharge).

I’m not typically one to question medical advice, but this is my second baby and I’m aware that once things start in earnest, they can go quickly. The hospital is a 30-50 minute drive away, depending on traffic. WIBU to head that way anyway? Or are the midwives right in saying that this could go on for days and I’ll be more comfortable at home? I just don’t want to end up in the local paper having delivered in a taxi by the side of the road!

They tried to send me home as I wasn't too bad, but quickly checked my dilation before I went, and I was already 4 cm.
Maybe just go and see? They can only send you home?

Motherofcreek · 21/03/2019 17:02

It’s bull shit advice!

The midwife didn’t believe me when I phoned her because I wasn’t struggling to talk and reluctantly told me to ‘come in if I insist’

I was 8cm when they checked me and started rushing about!

My cousin was basically told the same had her sons head crowning when she arrived at hospital Grin

JuniperGinYay · 21/03/2019 17:12

How’s it going?

I’ve chatted through 3 labours and never had the impossible to talk/ screamy thing. I didn’t even have proper regular contractions. A real nightmare trying to get anyone to take me seriously, my husband delivered the head of my last as no one would believe me to even examine me when I said ‘I’m giving birth NOW’

Maternity units in the UK are woefully understaffed so the midwives are under enormous pressure to keep women away. Not really their fault but it does mean its quite common for women to be turned away then end up delivering away from hospital or having a mad dash to get in. I had my eldest abroad and was told to come in to be examined whenever and was under no pressure to leave

This. I've never had a child in the UK, but my friends and family there always seem to be kept away as much as possible! Feels very weird from my perspective where the doctor was happy to see me as often as I liked during pregnancy and had no issue with me being at the hospital as soon as I felt I wanted to be.

Ooh op's been gone a while, I hope that means she's busy snuggling a new baby

HJE17 · 22/03/2019 12:23

Haha well, that was an experience! At the clinic I was told I was 2cm dilated and to come back tomorrow. So home I went. But as soon as I got home, the contractions ramped right up. I called my DH home from the office to pick me up and we went to the hospital. When I got there I was 5cm and the baby was born 3 hours later! Glad I didn’t leave things too late. Thanks, everyone, for telling me to trust my gut!

If I'd waited until I couldn't talk through a contraction my second baby would have been born in the driveway! She was FAST! Call them back and insist :)

Trust your instincts. I stayed at home with contractions like yours and my waters never broke and they never got where I couldn’t talk through them although they were bloody painful. They were also never regular. They’d be 3 minute gap, then 7 then 2 then 5. It went on for 24 hours then I said I had reduced movements just to be allowed to go in. I was 10cm and ready to push. I would have had her at home if i hadn’t gone in!

spritesandunicorns · 22/03/2019 13:12

Oops didn’t rtft. Congratulations!

safeea · 22/03/2019 13:13

Congratulations to you and your family 😀🌹👶

Jaggypinecone · 22/03/2019 13:14

Congrats! Instincts are there for a reason. I was sent home twice with my first. I wasn't more comfortable at home - I was fucking terrified. I just wanted to be in the hospital with folk around me who knew what they were doing. Third time I went in I refused to go home. Baby was born by emergency caesarian. I just knew I had to be in the hospital!

yolofish · 22/03/2019 13:20

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/03/2019 13:39

My dd's 2nd labour was very quick - her first was anything but.
She barely made it to the hospital. And they said that at least she made it to the labour ward - they regularly have people giving birth in the lift or the car park.
If I were you I think I'd go.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/03/2019 13:40

Oops, hadn't read it all, but congratulations!
