Tesco no longer selling Apple Strudel......in favour of Vegan Ice cream

Not posted in AIBU before so please gentle.
I went to our local Tesco, Tesco extra so a large store and thought I’d get an apple strudel or Aunt Bessie’s sticky toffee pudding for pudding tonight as midweek treat and DS( 24) is also popping over.
Couldn’t find either so asked a member of staff - apparently they’ve stopped doing the Apple Srudels, ( and the berry ones ) and Sticky toffee pudding has been removed for the foreseeable as it’s now Spring and due to the increased demand for Vegan IceCream there’s no room to stock them and other winter desserts. Normally they have both all year round. Even worse there are apparently no plans to reintroduce the Apple Strudel 😥
AIBU to think it’s still comfort pudding weather, or should I’d be in my bikini in the garden eating a Vegan Magnum?

I haven’t back tracked at all - the title was slightly tongue in cheek but I now realise that perhaps on AIBU that’s not appropriate.

Thanks to everyone who has suggested Lidl or Iceland and to @HeadsUpThumbsDownEveryone for your comments.

And I certainly didn’t make it up - that’s was the guys explanation, obviously more ice cream ranges come out this time of year and he either noticed or as pp said recited what he’d been told that they were stocking more Vegan ice cream products. It wasn’t a Vegan bashing post.

I’m not Vegan but if it’s tastes good I’ll it eat it Grin

Just be wary that even though the vegan magnums are called vegan they may contain milk. (listed in the ingredients section.)

NoooorthonerMum · 21/03/2019 14:30

@HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone

I think you need to take a deep breath. My comment was tongue and cheek. OP didn't write in with a desperately stressful situation she wrote in about apple strudel. I'm sure she's a grown up and without the help of the grumpy Mumsnet police she can handle a tongue and cheek comment about vegan ice cream and apple strudel. She'll be fine if all the comments aren't desperately earnest advice about how OP can most efficiently procure apple strudel.

AureliaJane · 21/03/2019 14:34

fwiw I’m a vegan and I didn’t think OP was having a go or trying to be a dick about vegans. But I do think it’s incredibly common for people to behave that way towards vegans so I can understand why some people are prickly about it. The thread could easily have gone the way of ‘why are Tesco catering to this faddy snowflake diet at the expense of normal people’. I’m glad it didn’t though!

anniehm · 21/03/2019 14:35

They had them in our Tesco last week, they stick what sells locally

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 21/03/2019 14:35

My comment was tongue and cheek

Of course it was. Hmm Maybe you should just admit you were unduly rude to the OP.

I’m not Vegan but if it’s tastes good I’ll it eat it

This is pretty much my life's motto. Grin You also don't need to apologise for your title there was nothing wrong with your post.

Haffiana · 21/03/2019 14:37

Can someone please post a foolproof recipe for strudel using ready rolled puff or filo please?

FullOfJellyBeans · 21/03/2019 14:42

@HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone

I don't like vegan ice cream or apple strudel but I do think you need to chill out and stop policing the thread!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 21/03/2019 14:48

but I do think you need to chill out and stop policing the thread!

Appologies if I came across as policing I just get so sick of people coming onto threads which area clearly light-hearted and posting saying that the Op is a liar or bashing certain groups (in this case Vegans).

There really is no need to be rude to someone saying they are making stuff or that they hate a certain group. I probably took umbridge more than usual because the Op had clearly stated she hadn't posted before and when reading her AIBU it had nothing to do with being rude about Vegans but some posters still felt the need to be rude to her.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/03/2019 15:50

It does sound a bit like you stumbled across someone misinformed who's a bit chippy about vegans OP. Im not a vegan but am dairy free and the ratio of vegan ice creams relative to non in the freezer section is comically small and I suspect will continue to be. But yes very possibly what the store is ranged for (put down to sell) will alter seasonally. I've worked in retail management previously and what a store gets stock wise is allocated by its store grading (size, sales) and then each departments store grading, the more practical explanation is that the frozen food department has been re-ranged as they often do, and the products allocated no longer include the strudel and instead represent core products that sell consistently. It's all really rather boring but in all my years of doing that job no memo came down targeting specific lines as a result of the surge in demand for something else and asking us to whip them away to make room (for the vegans Grin) Retail doesn't work that quickly. Perhaps that was this persons oversimplified understanding/how they took it and they glibly passed it on.

I basically expect several lines will have altered but you're only noticing the strudel (eyes on the prize op- I'm with you). I hope you find a suitable alternative. Not having your favourite treat is a day ruiner.

BarbarianMum · 21/03/2019 15:59

Tescos would sell your granny for glue if they though there was a market.

SparklySneakers · 21/03/2019 16:07

Both available in my Tesco on Tuesday.
Make an apple crumble instead Smile

Iltavilli · 21/03/2019 16:18

As with another PP not vegan, but dairy-free.

Halle-fracking-llujah mainstream supermarkets have finally got their acts together and introduced a wider range of dairy-free foods. Sorry OP that is at the expense of your lovely sounding strudel, but I would think it’s due to the change of season rather than anything else.

As others have suggested, lidl and Aldi do smashing versions.

IloveJudgeJudy · 21/03/2019 16:40

Both strudels are still available for me I have my shopping done at a customer fulfilment centre rather than a shop.

Nearlyadoctor · 21/03/2019 17:14

What’s a customer fufillment centre?

OP posts:
JustHereForASec · 21/03/2019 17:19

It was still in my Tesco last night.

I live out in the badlands so maybe veganism is slower to take hold!

IloveJudgeJudy · 21/03/2019 18:42

A customer fulfilment centre isn't a shop with customers it's like Ocado

IC4nSeeYourPixels · 21/03/2019 19:02

I still haven't got over them discontinuing the jalapeño melt things from their Italian ready meal range. They renamed it from sloppy Joe to jalepeno melt a while back and when I saw the discontinued but on the app I didn't worry, was proper gutted to learn they'd binned it off forever.

Every time I go in I still look to see if they've changed their minds and brought it back. Dh thought I was being daft until they also discounted the biscuits he liked. That'll teach the twat!

ivykaty44 · 21/03/2019 19:06

The vegan range is really good for those with dairy intolerance, why shouldn’t they have a selection of food to purchase ready made?

Bombalarino · 21/03/2019 19:12

Goodness me. Now I really want a strudel.
