My DS who is 3 has caught chicken pox and is covered head to toe. He has them on his penis, in his mouth and one on the lower lash line. He cant eat, drink, wee, poo without crying which I know is normal.

We are on day 6 and I cant even put cream on him without him crying in pain. I have given him several bicarb and or oat baths bit he cant even lie down in the bath as he cries and says it hurts. Even wearing clothes hurts him so is naked all the time. Is it normal to be so sore? He doesnt say they are itchy just really really sore and hurts. All my friends DC's have been so itchy but not hurt to the point of crying?

I've never had experience of CP before so any info would be appreciated. I'm giving calpol and piriton and also using poxclin as virasoothe wasnt working

My daughter had this, I took her to the out of hours and they gasped at her poor little body, she had them in her throat, between her legs, her ears everywhere - and like you I couldn't even touch her, she wanted to be held but it hurt too much. We went to the GP who quickly put her on antibiotics. within 2 doses of antibiotics she was on the mend. Hoe he's okay, its horrible disease.

CarpetWasntRolledOut · 20/03/2019 21:18

I hope it's over soon. Please take him to the GP, I don't think on this scale is normal.

It makes me so fucking angry that the vaccine isn't on the schedule as standard (yes, I had my DC vaccinated)

My DC2 had them really bad when she was around 18 months. She had them everywhere, in her mouth, on her lash line, on her labia... poor thing was in agony. We were doing oat baths every hour. Luckily she was still breastfeeding as it was the only thing to even come close to comforting her.
We ended up at OOH and she was prescribed antibiotics and super strength antihistamine, which helped the itching and knocked her out for some respite.
It was such a hard couple of weeks, but she's now nearly 11 and never had them again so hopefully she's built up a good immunity now.

  • call the GP (mine saw us last appt so an empty waiting room)
  • Piriton
  • Calamine
  • the OTC mousse (any pharmacy will have it, I forget the name)
  • baths with oatmeal (run water through tights)
  • any liquid is good.
  • same with food.

Poor sausage. Sounds grim.

Crunchymum · 20/03/2019 21:58

Sorry, put oats in tights and run water through the oaty tights

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 20/03/2019 21:59

Poor boy, no I wouldn’t say that’s normal either. Hope he is better soon. Ice lollies help get them to drink too, if the ones in their mouth are sore. Sad

Queenie8 · 20/03/2019 22:05

My ds had it really badly at 18 months, was vomiting every 15 mins for the first 24 hours too. Every time I bathed him he'd scream and physically shake, and then the same with the virasoothe cream.

I stopped bathing him, and got some calamine cream not lotion. Just dabbed it on gently where and when he'd let me touch him. By day seven it started clearing up and the spots dried out.

I also kept him naked as much as I could. He'd sit or lay on towels and blankets.

It will pass but if concerned get little one checked over.

MarvinMarvinson · 20/03/2019 22:05

Poor boy. Sounds similar to my lad, we went to the gp as he had them in his eyes and needed antibiotic drops. Definitely worth a call to the gp, that sounds worse than your normal dose.

KittyConCarne · 20/03/2019 22:08

I think you should give the GP a call in the morning- I don't think there'd be any harm in getting him checked over, even if it's just to give yourself peace of mind.
Middle 3 DC had chicken pox at varying degrees of severity- DD1 had one on her actual eyeball which needed checking Confused
If I was you, I'd be requesting a checkup.
Hope he gets better soon Flowers

Butiwantto · 20/03/2019 22:08

I had them really badly as an older child and still remember how painful it was to lie down on anything! Wearing clothes was awful too. Do you have anything silky (silk scarves etc) you can lay over the bed or cushions etc to make lying down softer for him and stop it rubbing on his sore skin so much? Also turn his pjs etc inside out so that the stitching and labels dont irriate so much (although no clothes at all is preferable). Heat or sweat can make it feel a lot worse so try and keep him cool and make sure any baths are luke warm at most. Sucking ice lollies/ice cubes perhaps to help soothe the the throat too.
Hope he turns the corner and starts picking up soon, poor thing

fairybeagle · 20/03/2019 22:12

Poor baby, please take him to the GP asap! Does not sound right x

Pegase · 20/03/2019 22:20

If anyone looking up chicken pox in the future comes across this thread, you may not be aware that there is an effective vaccine available, on the vaccination schedule in other countries although not the U.K. It is available privately in the U.K. to prevent this.

So sorry about your DS OP and hope he is on the mend soon. I can still remember having CP as a child with horror.

Itsmeeloise · 20/03/2019 23:02

Awww poor kid. Try and get him to GP. You could also speak to pharmacist. My daughter had other health issues so was given oral Aciclovir (sp?) which was magic.

BobIsNotYourUncle · 21/03/2019 15:03

How is he today OP?
