Please help me write this presentation? Panicking and ill, feeling shit

I have a 20-minute, very important presentation as part of my degree. On track for a 2.1 classification before this week. I got ill last week, assumed it would disappear over a few days but had a temperature over the weekend which is gone now though, ended up sleeping the last few days.

Due to my uni rules, I'm not allowed to ask for an extension now because it's too late. So, how can I set about writing this? 20 minutes seems so long.

I feel totally blank which is so frustrating. I have an idea of what I need to say but I can't seem to write properly Confused I think just from tiredness.

Needs to be handed in at 9am on Thursday morning it's going to wreck my degree Sad

Thank you, people. Feeling slightly more positive about the task ahead now! Also taken a decongestant which seems to be working at least a bit which is easing the discomfort there.

That's the thing though I think the slides have to have a certain amount of info on them so they can be marked by the external assessor if your piece gets chosen randomly. Something to do with quality control I think.

Do a title slide then an intro slide about your objectives (what you aim to cover).
Do a summary slide at the end with key points and take away messages
Then you can do a slide with ‘any questions?’. Then at the end a ‘resources’ slide (eg links to websites you found useful, chapters in books).

This uses up 5 slides. I think 20 slides all full of info is too much for 20 mins so maybe these 5 slides will count towards the 20 slides advised but not make it drag on.

Perhaps thinking about the summary/take home messages might help focus the presentation.

I find that I can only absorb max 3 points in 1 slide when I am in the audience (more than that and I give up reading). I find graphics and simple diagrams helpful.

Do consider writing script notes that you can refer to for each slide that are DIFFERENT from what is on the slide - ie slide could just show a diagram. You can then give commentary (eg ‘community initiatives can broadly be categorised into nhs-related, local govt initiatives, local branches of national charities, grassroots-initiated... but in fact many have funding from multiple of these sources and have a variety of structures etc - just made that up btw).

My boss does these in his sleep for client pitches (I tart them up)
Title slide
Slide with 'index' of main topics (with Intro as first topic)
Intro slide, couple paragraphs at most.
Slide for each topic: one graph or table or paragraph or bullet ed list per slide.
Summary slide wrapping up, max two paragraphs.

I wrote a presentation for my PGCE in about 2 hours earlier this week- for context I expect my presentation to last about 13 minutes (10-15 was the target). Some slides are just graphs, but it is fully referenced. This also included making an A4 handout summarising my key points/findings.

Mine was on a research project and the structure I have used is roughly:
-Why is this an issue?
-What may be causing this issue?
-What were my key foci and why?
-Methods
-Results
-Conclusions and implications.

Some of these obviously took up more than one slide.

Regardless of whatever expectations the uni has of you, a presentation shouldn't contain big blocks of text. You need to summarise what you're going to say in bullet points and use figures to illustrate key points, then aim to talk around what's on the slide. You can still include all the info, but you just need to break it down and pick out what is important. One exception to this may be quotes, if you are using them.

Think about writing each point as clearly and concisely as possible, in language that's easy for an audience to process.

Giving each slide a title really helps as the audience then know where the presentation is going- I find questions can be useful for this e.g. "why should you care about x group?"

However, as long as you turn something in, this is not going to ruin your degree. This will be one part of one module, I imagine it's worth less than 10% of your final classification. Your final grade will be averaged out, so even if you get a 2.2 or a third, you can still get a 2.1 overall.

Google slideshareFlowers and key words from your topic. Somebody else may have done something similar. You can use it for ideas and inspiration. Don't copy it though. Good luck. Flowers

Here you go. Just an example from slideshare. Not sure if it's totally relevant but it's about rehabilitation. You get the idea though. Good luck. Smile

It’s definitely doable. Once you’re at work, you’ll almost certainly find you have to do presentations in less time than a full day.

StupidScholar · 19/03/2019 21:00

Interesting, I haven't heard of slideshare before. I wouldn't dream of copying! But will have a look at the link, thanks.
