Tonsils out at 25?

Pinkbutton85 · 19/03/2019 12:35

I was told it's not usual to have them out at this age. But after getting tonsilitis every 6 weeks or so for a few years I'm finally having them out in a few weeks.

Anyone had it done around this age? How was recovery? Thanks!

Best diet I've ever been on Grin

I was 21. Got an infection, so that didn't help, but yeah it was pretty awful.

You'll need a full 2 weeks off, as everyone else has said. So worth it, though.

I had mine out at 21. First 2 weeks were horrendous. BUT totally worth it im so glad I had them out as life without tonsillitis is fab!

Had mine out at 30, days 4-7 were the worse for me - fine after that. But hell, it totally changed my life! Like you i was ill every 6 weeks and permanently run down.

I had mine out at 16 and it was not particularly pleasant. Make sure you have plenty of rest and TLC. Take it easy, it’s harder as you get older. Take whatever pain relief you are offered and lots of soup and ice Lillie’s. Best of luck and get well quickly. Please update us.

I had mine out at 39. It was incredibly painful for a few weeks though dont regret it at all

BillyAndTheSillies · 19/03/2019 18:45

19 when I had them out. I remember my mum having to wake me up at 4am for painkillers so that I could actually eat breakfast when I woke up because swallowing hurt so bad. It's probably the only time I've kept up with an actual painkiller schedule to make sure I could keep on top of the pain

I'm 30 now, and on my third case of tonsillitis so far this year. Doctor has a suspicion my left hand tonsil is starting to grow back and they may have not taken as much tissue as they should have done. Laser surgery which is used more nowadays may be more likely to prevent this but mine were chopped out.

I had mine out at 43 - and I didn’t find it that bad at all. I was so sick of having tonsillitis and it was a huge relief to have them out.

I found managing the pain ok - I regularly spaced paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine, are soothing ice-lollies and I think I used Difflam too.

I made sure I ate to help with the healing - just chewed it all up well and didn’t eat much. And lots of rest!

I hit a bad patch about 10 days in - but that was more feeling incredibly tired and drained, and unwell - that cleared quickly.

It was so worth it - I’m 4 years on now and it so lovely to be tonsillitis free!

Had mine out at 39. Very easy recovery. Best thing I ever did for my health. I was losing weeks every year to tonsillitis, it just never got better.

EstrellaDamn · 19/03/2019 18:56

I was 26, it was ok apart from days 3-5 which were hideous.

I got it done on a Thursday and was back to normal the following Friday.

The dangly bit is called the uvula, OP Smile
I had mine out at 15, like a pp, after multiple recurring bouts of tonsilitis and my dad spending months persuading the ENT specialist that I needed it doing. I can't lie, it was the worst pain I've ever experienced (but I've never given birth so my point of reference may differ from others). I was off school for two weeks but I probably should have stayed off longer - it was my GSCE year and I didn't want to miss any more lessons. I couldn't speak properly for several days afterwards and the nurses at the hospital made me eat cornflakes before they'd let me go home...

I would still go through it again, though, to be rid of the tonsilitis. I used to get feverish hallucinations and end up screaming at the thing in the corner of my bedroom that only I could see. I have never, touch wood, been that ill again since the op and I have a very robust constitutional generally!

I always thought it was a minor op and recovery was fast.......until my poor 18 yr old had hers out. When the surgeon said she'd need 2-3 weeks off to recover, I literally laughed. I couldn't believe it....but oh my god, how wrong was I!!!!
Hideous. Extreme pain for at least a week. Just be prepared. Ask for suppository pain relief if you struggle. This was a saving grace for my daughter. The last thing you want to swallow is tablets. For the first two days not too bad, but then it got so painful, she was beside herself so we had to go back in 3 times to a & e.
Best of luck. Lots of soft food. She also lost a lot of weight really fast. But about 3 weeks after she began to turn a corner. She is very glad she had it done though as no more tonsillitis
