Am I right to be FUMING that BIL and SIL handed to my daughter for her birthday 2 free books from a cereal packet. Wrapped up as well then SIL pretended she had specially chosen them. And no they are not hard up-he was dripping in labels when we saw them.

At least they gave her something.

Sixer · 10/07/2007 13:17

Thought that counts. At least they remembered.

McDreamy · 10/07/2007 13:18

Sounds like my SIL and BIL! When DD was born I recieved a white baby vest from Woolies (nothing wrong with Woolies) but they'd even left the price on

RubySlippers · 10/07/2007 13:18

doesn't matter
Your DD won't care

WigWamBam · 10/07/2007 13:18

Not worth wasting your anger on, IMO.

It could have been much worst - my sister and BIL didn't give my dd a birthday present at all ...

Desiderata · 10/07/2007 13:19

Bemused perhaps, but fuming?

It's a bit naff, to be sure, but at least they remembered.

hertsnessex · 10/07/2007 13:22

think its fine if they had stated fromt he outset "its not much, but we couldnt afford alot" then its fine - at leaset they made the ffort.

but to pretend to have chosen them specifically is a bit cheap. id do the same for therer birthdays - give her all the free smaples out of magazines and say how you know she likes freebies - so thought shed love them!

I suppose that if she gets hungry she can always lick the cereal dust of the pages....

My sister once got a silky type scarf from a charity shop wiht the 20p price sticker still on.
She was 10.
Some people just aren't good with gifts, especially if they don't have kids and don't know what theyw oudl like, accept it and don't spend too much on them if it makes you feel better.

1Troll · 10/07/2007 13:24

I agree with you entirely herts. Would not have minded in least if had said BTW we got these from the cereal and thought she would like them.

I think you are right chirpy. I love buying gifts and take loads of time (I'm not suggesting I always get it right though [grin}. I think that's why I get so frustrated with SIL and BIL.

They bought DD a mouldly second hand musical book once, the batteries were flat - "you just need to put new ones in " they said, "it was such a bargain" - I put it in the bin

chopchopbusybusy · 10/07/2007 13:27

In revenge wrap up a couple of CDs or DVDs that come free with the newspaper for their Christmas present

Chirpygirl · 10/07/2007 13:28

Yup, sounds like they have no idea! Just wait until they have kids and then get your revenge.

I got in trouble a few years ago in tesco for accosting some poor 8 year old girl and asking her what book she would choose as a present for my friends daughter!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 10/07/2007 13:29

Seems like we are in a minority, but fwiw I would be cross too.

Chirpygirl · 10/07/2007 13:36

Oops! I didn't I mention I would be cross too! I would be really pissed off but knowing why might help you calm down afterwards!

McDreamy · 10/07/2007 13:37

There you go 1Troll there's 3 of us that would be cross, we're in the minority but you're not alone
