I have just returned to work (I've been back 3months) after 1 year of Mat leave. I am a teacher working a .8 contract.
Since returning, I have been feeling that I might be better off working full time. My workload is heavy and I feel I am doing as much work as if I was to work full time. Recently a promotion has become availiable and I would like to go for it. I know the SMT would prefer a full time member of staff to take on the role.
My husband is self employed and has 2 days off in the week where he looks after our DD.
We would be about £400 better off a month if I took the job (for working an extra 40 days in the year), this would mean we could have a few little luxuries and perhaps a small amount of savings for emergencies.
Should I go for it? I feel sad at losing the day off in the week with my DD but happy that my husband had time off with her.
I think the guilt will always be there whatever I do!

I get the feeling you're going to do it anyway, but another pt teacher here who would never go full time (at least while the kids are still at home). Like a pp said, I don't do it in order have spare time on my 1 day off (or time to myself), I do it so that I can keep on top of the workload and do a reasonable job in the classroom (ie be well prepared, come in with energy and ideas), and because I do the homework on my day off, I more or less have weekends free for the family, bar the odd bit of Sunday planning.
If I was full time I would rely on dh to do everything home-related - all shopping and cooking, all chores, every school and cm pick up, playdates,... And I want to be a little part of that. My dh also has 2 days off a week so it would be possible to leave it all to him, but quite simply I want to be involved in my children's lives during the week!

Thanks @hereiamitsme I'm not 100% sure on what I'm going to do. Regarding the workload. I get to school at 7am everyday (my choice as I work best in the mornings) and get pretty much everything I need to to do done in the day. If I have to take anything home, it happens rarely, but I get it down before I go to bed or take an evening in the weekend. I think I can handle the extra workload simply because it will be a Friday and on a Friday they currently have social games/sports in the afternoon and assembly in the morning leaving only 1 hour teaching time. It feels like an easy day.

I went back PT initially. It was shit as I had to fit a full time job into part time hours and work ended up spilling into my days off anyway. I went back FT after a few months.

I find FT much better from a salary point of view and like you I was working FT anyway!

I've decided not to go for it. Thank you for all your thoughts and responses. It helped to put things into perspective.

I would do it. Children benefit from mums who have careers - what a great example you’re setting! It’s a fantastic opportunity.
