Aibu white board markers!

These things are the bain of my life. I've just had to replace ds white polo shirts yet again as they are ruined with white board markers. Aibu to ask the teacher to get the kids to wear an old t-shirt ( which we were required to provide ) when doing messy activities? I can't afford to keep replacing t-shirts. This is not just one or two small marks which I could live with it's several big marks. I've even asked ds if he or his friends are deliberately doing it to each other but he says no.

If anyone has any stain removing tips for markers I am more than happy to try anything

@Allyg1185 then ask them to allow him to wear it for whiteboard activities

Rubbing with fairy liquid gets them out, but only before they go in the washing machine, if you wash it in the machine first I think it's pretty much impossible to get out.

Will give fairy liquid a try thanks

I’m a y1 TA. They all go a bit mad with the WB - it’s a real incentive to get work done and they are used a lot. I do worry about the use of plastic, but tbh, paper is probably worse and you end up with too much if it.

Kids do muck around with the pens, but they do that with anything. My 4 dc just get sent to school wearing the same polos - wb marker stains or not!

I quite happily send ds in to school with paint and marker stains on his school uniform. He doesn't have to look perfect for school and I'm buggered if I'm going to fret about laundry.

spugzbunny · 18/03/2019 18:40

Does sunlight not get it out? I've yet to find a stain that is invincible to sunlight!

Qwertylass · 18/03/2019 18:40

Yr 5 teacher I know that feeling x

Try soaking in milk and rinsing with white vinegar. Usually gets the worst of the stains off my dd's polo's. Only tried fresh marks. My granddad was a printer and my nan used to do it to all his shirts. He only had one shirt that wasn't spotless.

YABU!! He is a 7 year old, whiteboard pen is not the end of the world. He is learning in school which means he WILL get messy. Send him to school with pen on his shirt it doesn't matter. If you're washing it and it's clean then no teacher will complain that they have a bit of pen on them. What does matter is that he is learning and progressing in whatever it is he is using that pen for! E. Writing/phonics.

You are asking for your child to be singled out and possibly humiliated as they will be the only child in the class that is forced to wear an apron for using a whiteboard. How ridiculous. They are teachers, not the pen police or shirt inspectors. Of course all children are expected to use their pens properly and are reminded to do so but accidents will happen.

Fine to be fed up about it, not fine to single out your child and embarrass them by making them wear an apron.

bluebambino · 18/03/2019 19:30

And using whiteboards and pens is not considered to be a "messy activity" and if you think that teachers are going to waste time asking their phonics groups to put on aprons first when it is valuable learning time then you are wrong. What's more important, your child's learning or their shirt?

NailsNeedDoing · 18/03/2019 19:30

Whiteboards have got to be better than wasting paper, despite the plastic waste. Would be nice to see a pen recycling scheme.

TBH, I wouldn't comply with asking a child to put on an overall every time we were using whiteboards, we use them because they are quick and easy, having to remember to get an apron out for one child would defeat the object.

I'd say the problem isn't the whiteboard pens, it's the fact that your school puts small children in white uniform and then presumably expects them to look fairly smart.

I have sympathy for op. Ours are about £15. And would have done for being passed down to ds2. Luckily the school do a second hand uniform sale so i get spares there.
I dont like sending in with a pen mark and keep a best one for photos and important days.
