Sitting in a maternity waiting room stinking of smoke

AIBU to think that you shouldn't sit in a maternity waiting room full of pregnant people stinking of smoke? The person I'm thinking about was a man there with his partner.

I know it isn't the same as smoking next to everybody but would you not bring a change of jumper etc if you knew you had to sit next to a load of pregnant people?

I was there today for a test and was asked to wait in the waiting room for 2 hours and do limited movement - other than toilet trips or to get water. Fortunately he wasn't there for as long otherwise it would have driven me mad!

Am I just being petty?
Personally I don't think I'd go in to any area of the hospital stinking of smoke, but that's just me.

Do you not read mumsnet OP?

Cockadoodledooo · 18/03/2019 18:05

Um. OP, let's for the sake of argument say smokers were obligated to carry/change into alternative clothing when sat in a waiting room. Where do you suggest they leave the clothing they have removed? Because if they're carrying it with them as I expect they would be, how exactly would that make a difference?!

SquigglySquaw · 18/03/2019 18:09

Urgh no YANBU. That is so inconsiderate.

PippilottaLongstocking · 18/03/2019 18:15

I just want to add that I agree about only women getting pregnant, but I still think it’s incredibly petty to call OP out on using the phrase ‘pregnant people’, women are all people therefore it’s still an accurate description.

Penguincake · 18/03/2019 18:21

Our ante-natal waiting room on the ground floor has lots of windows. The windows cannot be opened even in boiling summer because of selfish assholes who stand under them smoking. The whole area they smoke in is covered in no smoking signs.

I have also seen very Pregnant women have to stand because male partners of other women use the seats. Both of these things make me angry.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 18/03/2019 18:25

No, YANBU. In pregnancy the mere smell of smoke made me retch.

Reaa · 18/03/2019 18:27

I hate the smell of some other people's perfumes and aftershaves.

Do I suggest that anyone who uses either carries around a change of clothes?

TedAndLola · 18/03/2019 18:48

If you want to see petty, refer to Spiderbaby13 and ChardonnaysPrettySister's posts!

Drogosnextwife · 18/03/2019 18:49

I think you’re reading a little too much into it

I'm not, I was just explaining why someone else had mentioned it. I'm really not that bothered tbh.

Climbingahoneytree · 18/03/2019 18:59

If you want to see petty, refer to Spiderbaby13 and ChardonnaysPrettySister's posts!

I thought the same, thank-you

I mentioned it because of the fact that breathing in smoke isn't meant to be good for anyone, not specifically the smell

It's not petty at all.

Using the correct names is incredibly important, mudding up the language saves confusion.

Only women can have babies.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/03/2019 19:24

Ah, I got muddled up too, I blame that early glass of wine.

Causes confusion, of cause.

YABU and Hmm

happyhillock · 18/03/2019 19:47

I don't like it when someone sits next to me wearing strong perfume or smelling of alcohol, make me feel sick it's everyday thing's that you have to put up with it, smoker's get a very bad time, vehicle's do a lot more damage..

PippilottaLongstocking · 18/03/2019 21:44

tedandlola if that’s aimed at me (I haven’t read enough posts to see if anyone else has mentioned something being petty) then it was their posts that I was referring to. OP isn’t being petty at all and I totally agree with her that it’s unfair to smoke before sitting in a room full of pregnant women

3ChangingForNow · 18/03/2019 21:49

Lol hope you don't walk through a car park to get to the maternity waiting room. All the car fumes and that. Just a heads up, sitting next to a person who has smoked isn't going to do anything whatsoever to your baby. And complaining about him doesn't somehow make you a better mother.

Babynut1 · 18/03/2019 21:54

YANBU I’d have prob puked all over the stinky fucker! I couldn’t tolerate fag breath or stale fag smells at all when I was pregnant.
Smokers are clueless as to how vile they smell 🤢
