I need a sewing machine

Didn’t know what board to put this on but I can spend no more than £100 and “only” want to make curtains and cushion covers. Can I get anything that’ll do that at this budget and does anyone have a good guide or YouTube link? I did s class years ago so can sew a bit but haven’t touched a machine since then! Thank you!

Not rttt but if your grandmothers machine has the motor bolted on the back and get someone ( preferably a friend or relative) who is reasonably competent at electrical stuff to swap old motor for new one. You can buy the motors on eBay.

Love my Janome 525s - it's the one they use on sewing bee - out of your budget buy secondhand would be an idea

I did an evening class in sewing as a young adult and they had Bernina machines. The tutor said if students can use them, anyone could, and she was right!

When I came to buy my own I bought a secondhand Bernina and it’s still going strong 30 years on. Lovely machine with no bells and whistles but just sews beautifully.

They have them in Aldi from time to time, you don't need anything fancy but consider if you need to be able to button hole for instance

Thanks all. Found a janome at £94 but not sure if sturdy enough
Also got a shop in a town near me I’ll maybe try

Janome are usually pretty solid

I am all for machines that do straight, zigzag, and if you want to be really fancy...can drop the feed dogs.

Anything computerised or with 20000 pre sets leaves me cold.

Have a happy time stitching, or, as Jean-Luc would say “make it sew” :)

If your Grandma’s machine in the loft is solid, take it to be serviced at the shop. You are going anyway, at least enquire how much to effect a motor repair. If you aren’t a driver : plug it in and take a short video of the problem to show shop staff.
