AIBU to worry myself so much about having to ever call in sick at work?

Just as the title says really. I always worry so much that it's like blotting my copy book and I will be thought badly of.

I haven't had a day off sick in 10 years and with a sickness bug sweeping through my family I'm sure it's going to happen soon.

I always dread thinking it means I'm going to be hauled over the coals for it and will be held against me

Anyone else?!

I should say that I have a chronic health condition that has seen me in a&e for treatment but I still have gone to work! Ridiculous I know!

No sensible manager would hold one episode of sickness in 10 years against you. Is there a reason you are so anxious about this?

YANBU, I hate ringing in sick too!

Last time was when I had an awful bug and spent the day in bed sleeping and feeling incredibly dizzy. I felt so guilty though Grin

I understand it can be awkward to actually phone and speak to your boss, OP, but no, I don’t avoid phoning in sick if I’m sick. That would be silly.

I can understand having pride in a long period of time without a day off sick, but as long as you do it reasonably early in the day, you should not be worried.

Wanderingnomad · 17/03/2019 20:23

I'm like this, but I realised it does me no favours, soldiering on. When you keep working through people assume you can't be that sick, while some colleagues of mine take off a week at a time and get bucketloads of sympathy because everyone assumes they must be so ill to do that.

I remember sitting in a meeting earlier this year and feeling absolutely awful, coughing and sweating and still I didn't take a day off. I've vowed never to do that again - no one respects you any more for coming to work when sick.

BitchQueen90 · 17/03/2019 20:24

I always feel like this. I'm lucky that I rarely have sick days but I always feel consumed with guilt when I do like I'm letting everyone down at work. Which is ridiculous I know.

I would not avoid calling in sick if I genuinely was though. For things like coughs/colds I always go into work but if I needed to go to A&E I would take the day off!

Chocolate35 · 17/03/2019 20:27

I USED to do this. But it’s pointless. You can’t work properly if you’re ill and you can’t recover while you’re working. It’s not nice calling in sick but managers tend to be ok about it if it’s genuine. Staying off also means you don’t spread it around.

Ive come to agree wit the saying that the things you worry about, are seldom the things that come true.

Why worry?

My first job after school, the managers and hr were awful to deal with when you were sick. You could ring and tell them that you were sick and couldn't come in and they could say 'o please don't do this, can you come in for a shorter shift'. If you didn't you would face the cold shoulder after returning to work for a few days. This has made me fear ringing in sick in any job I've had since then, even though other companies are most def not like this. A vomiting bug is the only thing that would make me ring in sick, anything else I would head in and suffer on for the day. It's ridiculous I know
