Argh!! And while we're at it, no I'm not wearing all green and covered in fucking shamrocks because I'm English and Welsh. I'm not fucking Irish. Neither are you in the slightest so why is this the second biggest holiday after fucking Christmas over here (in the States)?

Don't get me wrong, I love Ireland, the Irish and will have a glass of the black and totally get a lot of Americans (especially in the New England area) have Irish heritage but fucking hell, they go more overboard here than they do in sodding Ireland.

The stores have been full of related tat for the last two weeks!

I know of 6 people having parties today, not a one of them has a stitch of Irish in them. If I hear or see St Patty's one more time I'm going to flip. If you're going to celebrate it like it's your national holiday then at least get the name right.

Fully aware that I have the WORST pmt today and am happy to have my arse handed to me for being a miserable shit. Grin

I don't think Mums are really the target audience for Paddy's day.

Daubergine · 17/03/2019 16:38

And in particular, British Mums certainly are not lol.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 16:40
Confused

Erm, the target “audience” (weird phrase- it isn’t a theatre production) for St Patricks day is anyone who wants to celebrate the national feast day of Ireland. Lots of those people are mums.

Patrick normally becomes Pat, Paddy or Patsy where I am in NI. I don’t know any Patty’s.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 16:41

Oh it also becomes Packy/Paky sometimes too.

cheesemongery · 17/03/2019 16:43

Pádraig, surely ?

My ex wanted to call our son Padraig... I settled on George Grin

He was a complete plastic. At least I have 's3/4 Irish in my blood.

As for Patty's day - I've never heard anyone say that. I don't celebrate St Patrick's Day, St George's, St Andrew's or anything like that. It's just an excuse for a piss up is it not?

DGRossetti · 17/03/2019 16:46

travelled I have been asked in Mexico if we Brits celebrated the 4th of July, I replied we celebrated it a happy traitors day.

Well, there's plenty of fireworks in Brum on 4th July. One thing the English are able to do is celebrate anything if it involves food and/or drink Grin ...

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/03/2019 16:48

Don’t get me started on Pomp and Circumstance n1 (land of hope and glory) being piped out all across America for every bloody graduation. Now right down to kindergarten apparently. It’s a British song. Americans, your country didn't belong to this country when it was written. It was only played for Elgar at Yale. No one gave you the right to steal our song, which would make a better national anthem btw. (And breathe)

Gone4Good 😂😂😂
Love the comment about the more astute American getting the joke.
QueenofIce 😂😂😂
I think thanksgiving on 4th is a great answer!

InionEisle
I believe we Brits are just about to get our very own self deprecating day to celebrate... maybe in a couple of weeks.

I think that can be offset by the use of "Liberty Bell" in US military parades ....

I've seen at least 9 local businesses on facebook put 'happy st patty's'. Being in an utter cunt of a mood and bridling on the Irish's behalf I've corrected all of them like a know it all pompous twat.

Taneartagam · 17/03/2019 18:10

Has anyone told you yet OP that St Patrick was Welsh.

10IAR · 17/03/2019 18:13

Taneartagam yup, DGRosseti a couple of pages back.

beanaseireann · 17/03/2019 19:22

St. Patrick was apparently Welsh so Pádraig was the name the Irish gave him.

I'm still reeling from the fact the OP called my country 'sodding'

LaughableLemur · 17/03/2019 19:22

But I know someone (who is Irish) called Patrick who prefers being called Pat to Paddy. Is he not allowed?

MitziK · 17/03/2019 19:27

I'm still reeling from the fact the OP called my country 'sodding'

According to DP's mate (Dubliner), the only mistake was it should have been 'sodden' instead.

noseoftralee · 17/03/2019 19:35

It’s allowed

LaughableLemur · 17/03/2019 20:13

noseoftralee ahhh thank fuck for that! 😂

SisterMichael · 17/03/2019 20:17

Do you know anyone who calls Patrick ‘Packy’? They do on London Irish (a tv series) but I’d never heard that before. Is it common?

SisterMichael · 17/03/2019 20:18

Blush (hadn’t rtft before I posted) ignore me.

JaneJeffer · 17/03/2019 20:20

Yes. Here's a famous Packie

Paddy's Paddy's Paddy's! Not fucking 'Patty's'!
dementedma · 17/03/2019 20:26

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 17/03/2019 20:27

🍀 patty 🍀

SisterMichael · 17/03/2019 20:32

Thanks Jane. Is he goalkeeper for Ireland? So he would be well known in Ireland? Sorry I have no knowledge of football Blush

Iblinkedandiamold · 17/03/2019 20:34

St. Patty's day gives me irrational rage. I love the day. Go to the local parade, go home, watch the club final on TV. Perfect.
American friends told me that Paddy is considered a slur. I told them it's a name like Tadgh.

When you think about it, we are celebrating a man who came to Ireland and told us our religion was no good and we had to change.
Oh and he got rid of snakes. Grin
.

PuppyMonkey · 17/03/2019 20:39

Down with this sort of thing.

noseoftralee · 17/03/2019 20:49

Thanks Jane. Is he goalkeeper for Ireland? So he would be well known in Ireland? Sorry I have no knowledge of football blush

For a generation of us that’s like asking if David Beckham was good at scoring goals. He is probably the most beloved of goalkeepers #Italia90 #neverforget
