4 year old DD has given herself a haircut

And I'm really upset about it, more upset than I probably should be. She has gorgeous curly hair and she's never had a proper haircut, a few trims, it just about reaches her shoulders how it naturally rests but when the curls are stretched out it's a fair bit down her back. Well it was, now she's barely got an inch of hair on top and maybe a little bit more on one side. The other side and the back were left alone as I caught her before she could get to the rest. Funny thing is she was on about wanting longer hair yesterday. Not sure what to do about it really, I should probably just take her to get the rest of as much as I don't want to, she has nursery tomorrow though and the hairdressers won't be open today

jaxhog at least you kept it in the family.

I set up a hairdressers in our shed and cut the little girl next doors hair. Luckily she was my only customer.

tillytrotter1 · 17/03/2019 12:35

So glad she did it on your watch, a nursery or school would be pilloried on here for neglect, yet here you all are, laughing it off! I do wish parents would remember things like this when they're having a pop at those merely in loco parentis.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/03/2019 12:36

Oh bless her. She doesn’t want the rest off. 😢 It was just a silly impulse thing. It sounds as if you don’t have a lot of choice though. Maybe buy her a nice hat?

Pinkbells · 17/03/2019 12:36

I did this to next doors long haired german shepherd when I was about 3! Ok for a dog, but it's very sad to see the lovely curls lopped off your child :-(. I wouldn't touch it then take her in to a hairdresser on Monday morning.

CoughingAndSneezing · 17/03/2019 12:36

I was about 3 or 4 when my brother (a year older) and I played hairdressers with crimping shears!
Luckily the next door neighbour was a hairdresser so she sorted it out. I had very short hair for a while.
Funny memory Grin

Don't worry about it OP, it'll grow back.

Musicalmistress · 17/03/2019 12:39

It’s really common at that age. Make sure you take plenty of pics to put on display for her 18th birthday you might be able to laugh about it by then 😕

Bloodymary · 17/03/2019 12:42

OP we have all been there; it will grow.
The worst I had to deal with was when my 15 year old shaved all of hers off!

So sorry, OP, but I am trying not to giggle. Your DD sounds so cute and adventurous. I like the sound of her. My DDs have never done this but they are fairly conformist.

MortyVicar · 17/03/2019 12:45

And while we're at it, please don't beat yourself up for the scissors being around.

BlackPrism · 17/03/2019 12:45

Hahahahaha I did this.

Watched mulan as a kid and cut a huge bald spot in my bright blonde curls... my mum used caffeine shampoo and it grew back just fine.

Hilarious looking back

picklemepopcorn · 17/03/2019 12:48

Take a photo and look forward to laughing at it on her 18th bday.
At least curly hair is forgiving of an uneven cut.

BringOnTheScience · 17/03/2019 12:52

Friend's daughter carefully slid the scissors in above the top bobble of one of her pigtails, right next to her scalp, so it was only when getting ready for bed that the huge chunk of waist length hair fell out!

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2019 12:55

I cut all my hair off the morning I was supposed to be a bridesmaid. I was about 3/4 at the time. I can still remember mum’s face when she walked into the bathroom!

You’ll look back with her when she’s older and laugh about it. Take photos!

WatchingFromTheWings · 17/03/2019 12:59

My sister did this as a kid as did her daughter. My niece cut her fringe to around half an inch long (very unevenly!) 2 days before school photo day! 😁

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/03/2019 12:59

Oh bless you, we've all been there...both my DD and DS have done this and both took off entire fringes leaving about a centimetre on their forehead Hmm. Friar Tuck springs to mind. I had a hairdresser friend "straighten" it up on both occasions and then it was a matter of waiting for it to grow again. I don't know anybody this hasn't happened to at one time or another and the nursery will be very well used to it!

AChickenCalledKorma · 17/03/2019 13:01

My daughter did it at the same age, about an hour before we were due to attend a friend's daughter's christening. So I do know that it's upsetting, but it's also really, really common. Thankfully your daughter is not hurt and if she's upset about her hair, at least she is learning a useful life lesson about consequences. Definitely take her to a hairdresser - one that specialises in children's haircut will have plenty of experience of doing salvage jobs on little girls who found a pair of scissors lying around.

MumUnderTheMoon · 17/03/2019 13:01

My dd had an asymmetric cut for a while as she wanted it "short and long" she looked amazing.

JaneEyre07 · 17/03/2019 13:02

I'd stupidly left some scissors out in the bathroom as I'd cut the labels off a new bathmat.

Eldest DD decided to trim her fringe. To about 2mms. Luckily I walked back in just as she was about to cut her younger sisters.............

It looked horrific for about 6 months Hmm

We've all been there OP.

Imacliche · 17/03/2019 13:04

My daughter did this a couple of years back. She was very creative and used a chair to reach the scissors while i was on the loo.
She gave herself a huge bald patch at the back and cut half her fringe right off.
She is still growing it back now. Its just reached a length where when i go get it cut into a bob it will all be one length.

Backseatonthebus · 17/03/2019 13:05

My DD only got as far as her fringe. Sadly the cat wasn't as lucky and sported stubble rather than whiskers for some time.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/03/2019 13:09

My Dd looked like Friar Tuck for months.
I sobbed down the phone to my friend saying she wasn't pretty anymoreBlush

I find it hilarious nowGrin

Birdie6 · 17/03/2019 13:10

DS8 cut his all off - the day before his school photos were to be taken. He had beautiful blonde curls - which he hated ! Thought if he cut them off , they'd never grow back. He is an adult now and still shaves his head .
The curls have never been seen since !

leiaskye · 17/03/2019 13:50

When my daughter was 4, a week before she started school, she was playing up stairs with her cousins. Boy aged 4, girl aged 3. They were very quiet so my dad went to see.

They were sitting in a circle, cutting each other’s hair. My daughter was missing a huge chunk! We all just laughed.no point getting upset, what’s done is done & it will grow back soon enough.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/03/2019 13:54

Most kids have a try at this (although I'm pretty sure my 4 year old lacks the dexterity to do such a thorough job). Just be glad she didn't cut off someone else's child's curls.

Yet.

speakout · 17/03/2019 13:58

That's so funny!!
