To think people who use "like" overly are irritating?

Too many times I've had to switch over the TV as there is someone who is, you know, like, using like, every, like, other word. I dread that day when I have to interview one of these people as no matter how intelligent and qualified they are, there is no way I could employ them. Do they not realise that they sound stupid? Does no one tell them to pack it in? Arrrggghhhh, it drives me crazy!

Or am I, like, being totally, like, being unreasonable?

Like too funny

ScafellPoke · 19/03/2019 18:19

Argh! I can’t stand it! There’s a woman in work who does it and I worry when after I’ve spoken to her that it’s rubbed off that I’m get really concious about what I say!

MonicaGB · 19/03/2019 19:32

I did wonder, as no one had responded, that I was on my own on this one. I worry that it will creep into my vocabulary too. It's just such an irritant that it needs to be banned Wink.

Like, totally!!

SlimGin · 19/03/2019 20:06

When I was younger I used it a lot without realising, then made a big conscious effort not to use it and eventually it dropped out of my vocabulary. I bet most people who overuse it have no idea they're doing so.

CalmDownPacino · 19/03/2019 20:09

My daughter does this, like all the time! So mum I was like coming out of maths and you know Jade, well like, Jade was in trouble because she like forgot her books and omg like she got in so much trouble. It was like, hilarious. Shut. Up!!!!

MonicaGB · 19/03/2019 20:16

Not sure how I'd feel about having spawned a likebot. You need to beat that out of her tout suite Wink

Am sitting in a room of dds friends, it’s “like” every other bloody word. And is soooo wish they knew what literally meant.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/03/2019 20:24

Not as irritating as the I've use of super, super busy, super happy, super bleurgh

ComeOnGordon · 19/03/2019 20:27

My sister who is old enough to know better does this Angry Angry it drives me crazy. But the good thing is it drives my kids crazy too so it’s stopped them using it so much

Decormad38 · 19/03/2019 20:29

Oh dear that’s me Blush

TinselAndKnickers · 19/03/2019 20:30

I'm awful for using fillers Blush

CurlsandCurves · 19/03/2019 20:32

So, I’m just posting on this thread to add my annoyance at people who start every sentence and/or respond to every question asked of them with ‘So...’

mrswishywashy1 · 19/03/2019 20:32

I do it all the time Blush I try so hard not to but like nearly every sentence has like in it 🙈 I'm from NI and a lot of people say it here and it makes me cringe every time I realise I say it.

MonicaGB · 19/03/2019 20:39

I did have to double check that I didn't start anything with "so", as I'm a bit guilty if that. Didn't realise the like thing was common in NI, I always assumed it was an American thing that came over with the Kardashians (my other bug bear is the vocal fry thing that they do with their voices and now it's sneaking over here).

I think there are places for filler words, but not every other bloody word!

TheDarkPassenger · 19/03/2019 20:50

Like is very common up here too.

For example I’m a Geordie me like Grin

TheDarkPassenger · 19/03/2019 20:51

(I’m not a Geordie btw, we have more of a Yorkshire accent but we’ve still adopted the ‘like’)

NataliaOsipova · 19/03/2019 20:52

It’s horrendous. Painful to listen to. It’s struck me that being able to speak fluently is a huge skill; subconsciously, people take what you say so much more seriously if you can express yourself clearly without inserting “like” or “errr” after every other word......
