To think a PG film isn’t suitable for reception?

Am I being really precious about this? My son told me tonight he’s scared and can’t stop thinking about a film he watched in school last week. It’s definitely a children’s film but I’d say one aimed at 7-8 years old + (in my opinion) . It’s a PG and he is in reception, just turned 5. He’s generally pretty sensitive and does get scared at films. He watches lots of TV but not really films for this reason. He said he didn’t tell the teacher he found it scary as he was trying to be ‘brave’ . However the other children noticed he was crying and told the teacher. They didnt tell me about the incident. I think if he was crying at a U film I wouldn’t feel so bad - but why show them a PG? I feel like mentioning it to the teacher but i’m wondering if I am being overprotective of my PFB so please let me know your thoughts!

I think charlie and the chocolate factory is definitely aimed at kids lower than 7-8! More like 4-8. My DD watched this in reception and no one had an issue. If DS is sensitive maybe have a word with his teacher to let her know he was bothered by it and she may be more cautious next time.

What’s scary about rhem?

Johnny Depp’s hair, Johnny Depp’s voice. Outrageous departure from the (absolutely brilliant) book.

The film is PG. The school should have chosen U or checked with parents. Individual varying views of the film are irrelevant.

YANBU

They should have sought permission. Regardless of whether it sold or wouldn’t be ok. This applies all the way through primary.

The JD one seems ok to me but Dh said the Gene Wilder one was bloody weird with some animal slaughter thing(!) in the background of one scene. I can't comment, I've never seen it. Anyway I know that when DD's school ran film evenings the films were always U for KS1 so I guess YANBU.

They ABVU to show the shit one with creepy Jonny Depp in when they could have shown the wonderful original

My DS is 5 and watched the original one version the other day. He was really scared of the oompalumpas and worried about what happened to the children once they were carted off. I had to keep reminding him that it was only pretend and they were fine.

Saying that, he's a boy who was absolutely terrified of the Whohaas in ITNG. But he's also watched Jurassic Park and laughed his head off at the t-rex bit. Confused

I don’t think Charlie and the chocolate factory will cause prolonged emotional issues so I would let it go

My 4 year old watches PG films all the time, one of her favourite films is Hocus Pocus. It does depend on wether it was the old one or the new one, because the old Charlie and the Chocolate factory is scarier than than the new one.
