Just wondering if anybody has one and if you would recommend it?

OP posts:
Harebel · 15/03/2019 17:54

Exactly why do you care if anyone else has one and want to know if they would recommend it?

You've established it's not your decision anyway and you appear to want to control what other posters responses are, even to the point of getting snippy when they dare to recommend an alternative. Confused

ForalltheSaints · 15/03/2019 18:16

Hired one on holiday in France. Lovely to drive, comfortable- just did not like hills at all.

Roxyxoxo · 15/03/2019 18:18

I loved mine, only sold it when I was pregnant as it isn’t overly practical for car seats and prams etc! Not much room in the back seats for passengers or room in the boot, so depends if it’s likely this will be an issue. I found mine so cheap to run, lovely to drive, and never had any issues in the 3 and a bit years I had it. I think it might depend on what year you get though, as some of the slightly older ones had some issues which were ironed out with future releases.

Pk37 · 15/03/2019 18:23

@Harebel I thought the same thing .
The responses made by the OP are so snippy and rude .
Why ask an opinion if you don’t actually want one ?

MadSweeney · 15/03/2019 18:26

The whole acronym thing applies to all manufacturers. I can find something similar about every car on the road so makes me laugh when people trot out the age old Fiat one, it's tedious actually. I had a Fiat Punto years ago, it was crap. I have a 500 it's not crap. Shock horror, things improve!

This is just a small section of derogatory acronyms to be found

I used to have one. I hated it and got rid of it.

1.2 engine felt soooooo much smaller than it was. No power to the point of feeling unsafe at speed at times. The whole car felt flimsy, almost like a toy car.

I will concede that it was ok for nipping about town in, and easy to park.

I wouldn't let a teenager of mine have one based on the safety reviews. If I had money to spend on a brand new Fiat 500 I'd sooner use it to buy a slightly older little VW or something.

behindlocknumbernine · 15/03/2019 18:34

I have a 1.2 lounge 500 convertible. 64 reg.
I bloody love it.
I am 6ft1 tall but fit in the 500 nicely.
Yes the engine can be sluggish, but I user her for pooteling to work, to the yard and to see friends, all local.
Dh (who is a powerful car fan) loves her too and will often steal her 'just to pop to....', leaving his car at home.

ceeveebee · 15/03/2019 18:37

I have a Fiat 500 and love it! I only use it for nipping about, parking at the train station and dropping kids at school etc but it’s fun to drive, easy to park and actually feels quite spacious inside due to the high roof.
I am only 5’1” though! Good tech as well with Bluetooth hands free etc. Mine is now 6 years old and I bought it used at 3 years old. Only criticism is that the cup holder is too small to fit a standard coffee cup in (#priorities)

Actually I do find that other drivers, particularly in 4x4s, are more aggressive and don’t let me go at roundabouts etc even if my right of way. But that’s because they are mostly dicks and I just wave and smile

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 15/03/2019 18:45

There’s really no need to be snappy with people, OP. You asked for opinions, you can’t dictate what people respond with.

I’m actually idly wondering if you’re a troll, because considering you refuse to consider anything else and your teen seems to have picked her own brand new car, I can’t see any point in your posting other than to be an embodiment of the fiat 500 stereotype.
Apologies if I’m wrong but there’s really no need for the attitude you’re dishing out on here.

smallereveryday · 15/03/2019 18:45

I have one got it for my newly qualified driver dd1.

We are rural and it has done 80k uphill and down dale as well as trips to the lakes and Cornwall (from Surrey)

Just about to order a less basic one now her insurance is no longer horrifying.

Dramatical · 15/03/2019 18:54

I don't mean to be snappy? I just wanted to ask about the 500.

OP posts:
MsPeachh · 15/03/2019 18:56

DP had one for a few months (was taking care of it for a friend who was working abroad) and he liked it more than he thought he would. It stalled very easily though and the battery would go flat if not run every day. I have a VW Up and it is a wee cracker, moves off quickly and gives me about 45 mpg.

Dramatical · 15/03/2019 19:00

I’m actually idly wondering if you’re a troll,

Report me then?

because considering you refuse to consider anything else

Not considering anything else on this thread, the options have been thoroughly considered prior to the thread being made. I did mention that she has test driven various cars.

and your teen seems to have picked her own brand new car,

I don't recall mentioning DD's age, but she has indeed chosen her own brand new car. I'm not sure why that would make me a troll though?

I can’t see any point in your posting other than to be an embodiment of the fiat 500 stereotype

I genuinely don't know what you mean here? My DD is buying a car, how am I embodying a stereotype?

OP posts:
Dramatical · 15/03/2019 19:03

The responses made by the OP are so snippy and rude

I don't mean them to be.

Why ask an opinion if you don’t actually want one ?

I DO want an opinion. I want an opinion from FIAT 500 owners/previous owners about the FIAT 500.

Responding with X is a better car isn't much help.

Again I don't mean to be rude but it's hard sifting through replies to a different question.

OP posts:
Dramatical · 15/03/2019 19:06

Exactly why do you care if anyone else has one and want to know if they would recommend it?

Because my DD is about to buy one and I am interested. I didn't think that was particularly odd.

You've established it's not your decision anyway and you appear to want to control what other posters responses are, even to the point of getting snippy when they dare to recommend an alternative.

I don't want to control what anybody says but i don't want people wasting their timer answering something I didn't ask.

I’ve had a 500 lounge, a 500C, 500L, 500 lounge again and now have the 595 Abarth. The Abarth goes like shit off a shovel and middleaged men in Mercs like to try to race me off roundabouts but they can eat my quad exhaust!
The customer service in the Fiat garage I use has always been exceptional which why I keep going back.

Dramatical · 15/03/2019 19:15

Worst car I’ve ever owned. I had a 1.2 lounge, the gear box went and cost a small fortune to replace,

Do you mind me asking the age/mileage when that went?

followed by a lightbulb for the rear number plate light - £1200 to replace as it wasn’t a bulb but the entire electric system that apparently runs round the whole of the car.

That's shocking - electrical problems seem to be common!

OP posts:
BlackPrism · 15/03/2019 19:28

I had the Sport edition and it was good but the regular one struggled with hills a lot and it's LOUD on the motorway

BlackPrism · 15/03/2019 19:31

Oh and neither of mine ever broke down or had an issue except when one was written off in a flood... the SUV next to it was too though

musicposy · 15/03/2019 19:58

I have one, OP, which I bought in November after wanting one for ages. I'm over 50 so to the PP who said she was too old at 37 - you're really not! Previously I had a Fiat Punto which lasted me almost 10 years and did 170,000 miles. It was a good reliable car but never had the wow factor of the 500.

What sold me on getting another Fiat was when someone ploughed into me at a roundabout. His car was completely smashed in at the front but my Fiat punto had barely a mark on it. I decided then I would replace with another Fiat.

I love my 500, absolutely love it. I have a 2013 model, not that new, low mileage. It's pretty nippy and I've done some reasonableness distances in it (100 mile round trips) and found it fine. I bought it as a car just for me though, because my DDs are now grown up and driving themselves, so I don't need to fit 4 people in any more. It's a bit cramped in the back!

The only downside? You've seen it already on this thread. There's something about them that brings the misogynistic arseholes out to play. I noticed it as soon as I drove it out of the showroom. People treat me appallingly, cut in front of me, push, overtake, make hand gestures etc. Before posters say it's my driving, we also own an ancient Peugeot 406, 17 feet long, towbar, built like a tank and I never, ever get this kind of behaviour when I drive that.

Within a month of owning it, all the glass was vandalised whilst I was in the supermarket. Supermarket and police were less than interested, I got the windows fixed on insurance. Except autoglass came out and made the crappiest ever job, wrecked the car, the glass doesn't fit, and I'm now having to escalate and battle that. I get the feeling they take one look at it and me and think "silly little woman in her girly car" and you CANNOT get taken seriously. It's seen as fair game for a joke, which reflects society's still appallingly sexist attitudes.

I since found out it's the most vandalised car by a long shot. I now park by other Fiat 500s and I notice they do the same to me! It can make you feel a bit vulnerable so that's the only downside you might want to consider for your DD.

Hope this is of some help!

Dramatical · 15/03/2019 20:08

There is definitely a difference in how some people treat you on the road when you drive a small car, I don't think it's FIAT 500 specific though. I have a Volkswagen Sharan which is my main car but often drive much smaller cars and there is a clear difference.

OP posts:
Dramatical · 15/03/2019 20:09

That's really interesting and a good heads up for her re parking.

hopl · 15/03/2019 20:27

I've got one and I love it! Had it two years and no problems apart from my exhaust -you have to be careful with big speed bumps I discovered!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/03/2019 20:27

We had one as a hire car for 3 weeks and Oh my god, I loved it so much. We hired it after our Ford Galaxy died and obviously it was as a big change in size.

It's such a fun, tiny little car to drive and such a joy to park. Great for 2 people, not so much for people in the back.

Ours was a 0.9 and it took almost a mile to get to 70 on the dual carriage way but that didn't bother me too much.

City driving was an absolute joy.

I would consider one but we have 2 teenagers so our new car is a Mini clubman. That's a fabulous car too.

I do love small quirky cars, there is something joyful about the Fiat 500 and the Mini.

Meadowland · 15/03/2019 20:36

I wouldn't buy a Fiat 500 due to it's poor safety rating. Safety is the first thing I consider when buying a car.
