Teacher’s got our surname wrong

DC have just started a new school.

They’ve had their first reading books sent home today with reading record books.

DC1’s reading record has the wrong surname written in it. As in a completely different first syllable. I’m not sure what’s happened there as we filled out all the forms with the surname spelt correctly, and DC1 is 7, and old enough to know his surname.

WIBU to bring it up? I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with DC1’s new teacher, but at the same time it’s surely a fairly important thing to get right?

I live with a teacher, they do 60 hour weeks.
Trust me s/he will barely register it other than to correct it.

Just send a note in. Honestly I was mortified when I had called a girl called Maria Ecclestone, Maria Edmonton for my whole PGCE. Wish her mum had told me!

Correct it.
Teacher will notice the correction instantly and get it sorted.

(Our books have printed labels and any correction stands out a mile off - we notice and get a new label printed, stick over the top, sorted)

Just mention it to the teacher....I had to do it on dd's settling in for school nursery as they'd spelt her name wrong on her peg, I also got a letter addressed to the wrong spelling.
I told the teacher who changed all her classroom things straight away.
Turned out someone in the office had inputted a letter wrong when copying from paper form into the computer.
Noone did it maliciously, nor were they angry that I pointed it out. It was a simple mistake.

I am a teacher and I make mistakes. Just stick a post it on the reading record with the correct spelling and the teacher will correct it.

Just politely correct them, they won't mind. They don't want to get the name wrong either.

I agree with KidLorne. It would be bad form to mention this so just change your child's name by deed poll

I had this. Two different but both equally common spellings of our surname. Teacher used the other one on books despite all forms etc having correct one.

Me via message to teacher: Hi, just wanted to let you know our surname is spelt xxx and I've noticed you've spelt it yyy. Thanks!

Her: Sorry about that, I'll make sure everything is corrected.

There was only one syllable that was wrong.

I think if you didn't correct it and allowed your dc to go through school with a different surname then when it does come to light the teacher will think you're very odd for not pointing it out. Unless you think it's just wrong on the reading book and correct everywhere else.....? In which case I'd just change it myself.

If the label is handwritten then stick another label over it with the correct spelling and write a post it inside .

If it printed then it has been entered wrongly on the computer, either by the teacher or more likely by the person inputting data in the office. Easily done but it means most if not all your child's records will have the incorrect spelling. I would drop a note into the office and also tell the class teacher or TA so things can be changed. Helpful to write down the correct spelling very clearly for them so the changes will be right. It's not a major problem to rectify.
