Bit yawn, sorry, but our energy provider (gas and electric) has just increased our direct debit to £160 per month and I'm slightly dismayed! Feels like LOADS. Is it loads or is that normal?

For context, me, DP and DS in a fairly large 4 bed Victorian end terrace. We don't heat two of the bedrooms and although I'm on mat leave so home a lot, we have special radiator valves (DP is a tech need) that are meant to let us heat rooms individually rather than heating the whole house just for one too.

Is £160 a month excessive?

Mines £103 dual fuel. 2 bedroom flat. Heatings on for around 5 hours a day in total. Lights on only as needed, don’t cook much and use washing machine twice a week.

I really don’t understand why the heck I’m paying £103. Just switched from Eon who were charging me £145 a month.

DrVonPatak · 13/03/2019 23:05

£45 for dual fuel in a small 3 bed semi, but we both work long hours and DH is a wizard in finding good deals online.

MrsAmaretto · 13/03/2019 23:06

You need to look at your annual or monthly usage, rather than monthly payment to see whether it’s average etc. Rather than £s. As everyone is on different tariffs? We pay £80 a month but have oil heating, 6 beds & 3 large reception rooms, so it’s not helpful!

myidentitymycrisis · 13/03/2019 23:09

£51 per month for gas and electricity in a two bed period conversion, in a terrace (no double glazing). I live alone and work part time so at home a fair amount. I'm in deficit but will even out in the summer.

LaLaLamp · 13/03/2019 23:10

45 a month for both. 1 bed flat, heating on whenever I fancy.

adaline · 13/03/2019 23:10

We pay about £60 for both. Two adults in a small two bed terrace.

Passthegin99 · 14/03/2019 08:06

Hmmmm...sounds like it's not much different from most then. We've done so much work insulating the place and I still always wear a jumper inside dammit!

@Scottishgirl85 who is your provider?

I refuse to pay by direct debit (or have smart meter) and only pay quarterly for exactly what we've used. £350 (combined energy bill) for 3 winter months, heating on constant but turning thermostat down if it gets warm in the house. It's a 3 bed semi built in the 1920s.

wendz86 · 14/03/2019 09:58

£54 a month, small two bed house. Me and two children.

Ffsnosexallowed · 14/03/2019 10:19

Have you checked your usage? Our provider was going to increase our dd list month by about 30%, despite us being in credit and our usage going down (new boiler). I contacted them and they decreased the dd.

QuirkyQuark · 14/03/2019 10:31

£110 a month but we're currently £250 in credit. It's a thre bed, three storey newish build semi.

If they've increased yours I'd assume that you've been underpaying for a while.

twigandgiggleberries · 14/03/2019 10:36

3 bed semi-detached (new-ish build). I work from home so the heating is on a lot. Ours is £110

twigandgiggleberries · 14/03/2019 10:37

Can you request a smart meter?

chillychicken · 14/03/2019 10:48

£111 a month, fairly large 4 bed detached.

We also have a log burner and spend about £150 a year on logs.

We heat every room but the radiators are set differently in every room - from past experience, not heating a room caused damp.

Asta19 · 14/03/2019 10:50

It's interesting that on paper meters cost more. I'm on meters and I'm in a 4 bed victorian and electric is £30 p/m, gas varies from £60 per month in the depths of winter to £10 p/m or less in the summer. So I guess averaged out £60 p/m for both. I'd consider over £100 expensive but it seems like a lot of people are paying that.

A friend and I had this exact conversation the other day, her house is the same size as mine and she's paying £200 p/m direct debit. I nearly fell off my chair! There are more people in her house but it still seems very high.

Arnoldthecat · 14/03/2019 10:58

2 bed modernish terrace (30 years old),,last months bill Gas £30, Electric £20. Gas used for heating/hw and cooking..

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/03/2019 11:00

I've come to the conclusion after several switches that time of switching is critical. If you switch in, say, September, the new supplier sets your DD at one-twelfth of your annual consumption, or thereabouts. Say £150. You then run into winter, and your usage exceeds this, and you build up a debit. They carry out a 6 month review, see you're in debit, and promptly increase your monthly DD to, say £200. Summer comes, and not only do you pay off the debit, but because they've increased the DD, you also build up a credit of 6month "excess DD", ie £300.

If you switch in March, you start with the low summer months and build up a credit, so the Sept review doesn't increase your DD, the credit pays for your extra winter fuel use, and you end up more or less even.

Biker47 · 14/03/2019 11:33

About £75 a month in a 4 bed detached new build, 2 adults.

OrangePot · 14/03/2019 11:50

4-bed end terrace Victorian house, £96/month. That basically covers massive gas bills in the winter (no heating in summer) and electric is supplemented by solar.

DizziLizzy · 15/03/2019 15:25

£135 pm dual fuel but approximately £30 a month of leccy goes towards charging my hybrid car.

DizziLizzy · 15/03/2019 15:26

Sorry, 4 bed 2 bath detached, 2016 build.

Roomba · 15/03/2019 15:28

About £80 a month for both - for a draughty victorian terrace and that's on a prepay tariff so more expensive than most tarrifs.

Princessmushroom · 15/03/2019 15:29

We pay £80 a month (well we don’t because I’ve referred lots of friends and family members and got credit on my bill) for a 5 bedroom detached, home a lot (run our own business), tumble dryer and dishwasher happy AND we have a hot tub in summer heated pretty much 24/7. And I am also trigger happy with the heating.

Admittedly only the two of us

Knickersononeshead · 15/03/2019 15:31

£121 a month because our supplier didn't believe my last gas meter reading 🙄 I've told them to send someone out in future to read them.

We hardly ever have the heating on so use very little gas really.

bea179 · 15/03/2019 15:37

2 bed 1970s mid terrace, 3 of us here half the week, 2 the other half. Dual fuel is £82 a month
