DD has caught head lice at nursery

AIBU to feel really cross that some people don’t treat head lice properly, if at all. Went to the Christmas concert and there was one child in particular who scratched her way through it. A letter from the head comes round shortly after stating nursery has an outbreak and how to treat/prevent etc. Noticed DD scratching yesterday at bedtime and upon inspection she has lice. Live lice. Horrid!
Nursery inform me today they have never really got on top of the situation due to some parents not addressing the issue properly/at all.
We’ve spent an hour yesterday conditioner combing and another hour today with the head lice treatment and combing. I know I should accept it’s just a part of school, so why do I feel so angry about it?!

Get used to it.

Hold the front page!

Yabu a bit. It is a fact of life and while it’s annoying it isnt really worth getting wound up about. You were quite judgy at the Xmas show-You don’t know that someone didn’t see your child yesterday scratching her head and thinks of you now as a lazy parent who won’t treat her child.
Get in the habit of a weekly nit comb after a nice conditioning treatment then you’ll keep on top of any outbreaks in future.

ShowOfHands · 13/03/2019 17:35

DD is 11. She started preschool at 3. I too have treated today. It's been 8 years and we're still battling it on occasion. Some parents will never bother.

Wait till she gets worms...

SoyDora · 13/03/2019 17:36

Yes it’s a pain. It probably won’t be the last time she gets them unfortunately! DD1 had them at Christmas, 4 weeks after a letter went out to parents about it. Think she caught them on the last day of term!
Part and parcel of parenting.

Isadora2007 · 13/03/2019 17:36

And you’re wasting time with the treatment. Just conditioning and nitty gritty comb every two days for two weeks to break the cycle and get rid without chemicals that don’t even work.

ShaggyRug · 13/03/2019 17:36

Welcome to the rest of her entire school career. At least until Y6. Kids get nits. No biggy.

Frenchmontana · 13/03/2019 17:37

Get used to it.

Who said the parent isnt treating it properly?

The one scratching may have only started scratching that day. Or caught them from another child.

It happens, it's annoying. Not point getting worked up.

ShowOfHands · 13/03/2019 17:37

Throughout primary, we nit combed weekly. It does help enormously. We also treated for worms regularly whether we saw them or not.

OwlBeThere · 13/03/2019 17:37

I’ve never understood this thing of ‘others don’t treat it soon enough’ it doesn’t matter if you treat it the minute you spot it, they still spread. That’s how the species survives. But yes, get used to it.

Worzilgummidge · 13/03/2019 17:38

Fact of life not much you can do

HaventGotAllDay · 13/03/2019 17:38

Dd caught them in first year of primary. As the reinfestation goes round and round in schools and stuff like otc treatments are a waste of money and generally shit, it took over 2 years (yep, years) before she was completely free.

crosser62 · 13/03/2019 17:38

It’s shitty yes.
But then so is diarrhoea and vomiting and chicken pox and hand foot and mouth and coughs and colds.
It’s all rubbish but I suppose at least head lice won’t make her poorly.

Iloveacurry · 13/03/2019 17:38

It get worse at school. Get use to it.

GreenTulips · 13/03/2019 17:38

But tea tree oil and throw a few srops in her hair

You should be checking weekly - if you haven’t you are adding to the problem

PinkiOcelot · 13/03/2019 17:39

Par for the course I’m afraid. It is annoying but not a lot you can do.

I would buy a Nitty Gritty. The only decent comb I found when both dds were riddled with head lice.

HaventGotAllDay · 13/03/2019 17:39

As Showy says, for the rest of primary I nitty-grittied with conditioner weekly just in case

Easterbunnyiscomingsoon · 13/03/2019 17:39

Plaits and a bit of hairspray helps ime.
Tea tree shampoo and conditioner and comb every night.

TheVanguardSix · 13/03/2019 17:40

Hedrin Once.

Oh and a warm welcome to primary school.

steff13 · 13/03/2019 17:42

Here, kids are sent home if they have lice. As a result, of my three kids, one of them has had lice one time.

I didn't know people could get worms until I joined MN. I've yet to experience that, thank goodness.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 13/03/2019 17:42

We’re treating DS (3) for head lice at the moment. Just a fact of life! Why are you surprised there was live lice? There will be unless you treat her!
I’m going to do the tea tree tonight after treatment, thanks PP! Bonus is that I did conditioner comb this morning and his curls have never looked so beautiful! Also first not treatment helped get rid of his cradle cap 👍🏻

Lwmommy · 13/03/2019 17:42

Yeah its just what you have to deal with until kids grow out of constantly hugging each other and leaning close to.play.

Good nit comb
Full marks shampoo
Lice repellant tea tree spray
Hair up in plaits

BendydickCuminsnatch · 13/03/2019 17:43

*nit treatment

Twotinydictators · 13/03/2019 17:45

Another thing to consider, my DD sometimes gets a dry scalp which can be itchy, so not all itching kids have nits! I check her regularly and just use the Nitty Gritty and conditioner as suggested by others... she's in Year 2 and has had them twice so far. Just one of those things!

Lindy2 · 13/03/2019 17:45

If your daughter had live lice you could see then today she was the one spreading head lice to the other children in her class. I would expect though that if you were accused of being to blame you would fibd that unfair.
Kids get headlice. It's not nice but it happens.
They also get threadworms. That's even less nice but it happens.
They also have a tendancy to spread them to their parents and siblings. You need to check you haven't got them too.
