To be pissed off about my Easter egg

Houseonahill · 12/03/2019 20:31

I feel like I'm being really petty so I'm ready to take it if I am but I bought an Easter egg on sunday afternoon, one of the medium sized ones for a fiver, and took it to work (in a pub) ate about a quarter of the egg and none on the chocolate bars that come with them and forgot it when I left. I went back in this afternoon, actually made a special trip just to get it, and someone has eaten it! They won't tell me who and all think it's really funny. I know it's just an Easter egg and in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal but I'm on a tight budget and that was my treat for the week. Also I wouldn't dream of just eating something if it wasn't mine.

AIBU to be pissed off? My work friend thinks I am.

Where / how was it left ? Anything left at my workplace on the table is considered "left for all" and fair game .
In a bag on the side it's a different matter?

ScreamingValenta · 13/03/2019 07:44

YANBU. If this happened to a colleague of mine, I'd suggest we chipped in £1 or 50p each to buy another egg.

EvaHarknessRose · 13/03/2019 07:47

One of my colleagues went on extended paternity leave leaving a large pack of kitkats on his desk. It was funny how many people couldn’t cope with it and kept asking about them (even though he always kept them on his desk and when he was there no one noticed). Humans must be programmed to seek out unattended food.

Myshinynewname · 13/03/2019 07:48

In my workplace anything like that would be eaten. It’s clearly too much chocolate for one person, it had been opened and left out so it would be assumed it had been bought for everyone. Surely it’s just a misunderstanding?

altiara · 13/03/2019 07:50

I bought medium sized Easter eggs in Tesco for 75p. No way would I spent £5!
Maybe leave a note saying you want it replaced?
Is there a work culture of sharing treats? Cant really say if they’re unreasonable or not because in our office, we leave stuff to share out and anything you don’t want to share you take home.

dogsdinnerlady · 13/03/2019 08:07

Easter eggs are terrible value for money OP so if you are on a budget better buy a bigger ordinary choc bar.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2019 08:12

I’d be pissed off. Have you spoken to your manager?

Margot33 · 13/03/2019 08:15

It's difficult because if you had a desk and it was stolen then that's definitely out of order. But behind a bar an opened half eaten egg (in a shared space), was probably presumed to be shared. You left work so they assumed it was to share. I think in this case it's not their fault.

BeenThereDone · 13/03/2019 08:16

Bring in another one dipped with laxatives!!! That will teach them

Order654 · 13/03/2019 08:29

I agree. You left it for 2 days as well

Birdsgottafly · 13/03/2019 08:39

I think it might have been thought of as shared. We used to have a few older people pass random things in, to be shared. But if it was deliberate, then I agree that theft is theft.

"Love pps idea of getting dog chocolates for them to steal, they'd think twice about being so scummy next time."

My eldest DD, now 34, has always loved dog chocolate. She'd thank you for the egg.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 13/03/2019 08:44

YANBU. But....

There is something about an opened Easter egg...you just can't help breaking off a tiny bit. Then another tiny bit. Suddenly it's all gone! And then the only thing to do is eat the remaining evidence (the bars), dispose of the packaging, and pretend the whole ugly debacle never happened.

They should buy you a new one though.

SilverBirchTree · 13/03/2019 08:47

I'd be upset too, especially as they are laughing about it instead of offering to replace it.

But where did you leave it? If it was in your own locker or something then YANBU. But if it was in a communal space like behind the bar or on the break room table etc.. then people probably assumed it was discarded or deliberately left there to be shared.

I'm sorry you lost your treat. I hope someone comes clean and replaces it for you.

iolaus · 13/03/2019 08:48

Food which is left in a communal area without the persons name written on it is fair game

Food left in the fridge however is not

In all honesty though while I think the partially eaten egg would have been demolished the wrapped bars of chocolate would likely have been left

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 13/03/2019 08:50

B&M sell Easter eggs for cats /dogs- 'treat' yourself to a few. Take some in ASAP. Stand back and smirk op.

The Op is on a tight budget, she says this - why do you think shes going to make a special trip to buy dog food to pass off ? What is wrong with you ?

Chocolate left out, in that atmosphere? I'd have binned it. The cleaners very well might have.

carrotflinger · 13/03/2019 08:51

I couldn't get past the fact that you bought and ate an Easter egg so far in advance of Easter Sunday... so I have had to reimagine the scenario. You bought five quid's worth of chocolate (you'd get a load more chocolate than in an Easter egg for the equivalent amount of money). You ate some of it and left the rest at work.

YANBU to be annoyed that someone at work as eaten. OTOH maybe they didn't realize the chocolate was yours and they thought it had been brought in to share, or a customer had bought it for you all as a treat etc.
I don't think they deliberately stole and ate your chocolate. I think it was probably a misunderstanding. If it was lying around in a communal area I bet they really did just think it was there for everyone.

icarriedaturnip · 13/03/2019 08:52

I don’t understand the cheekiness of people. If you didn’t buy it or haven’t been offered it don’t eat it. Even if they assumed it was there’s for the taking they shouldn’t. This really irks me so YANBU

Ceebs85 · 13/03/2019 08:53

Food left out at a workplace is fair game isn't it? Like I'd assume it was for everyone?

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 13/03/2019 08:54

Did they know it belonged to you? I can see why it got eaten/chucked out tbh. It was left there for 2 days and was probably seen as fair game especially if they didn’t know it was yours.

And they’re probably laughing about your overreaction (in their eyes) because it’s only an Easter egg and you can just get another. I assume they don’t know you’re on a very tight budget.

Damntheman · 13/03/2019 09:00

I can't get over so many people thinking it's quite okay to eat something that doesn't belong to them without very clear communication that it's communcal food - verbal or written.

I wouldn't even dream of touching a chocolate egg if it were not mine! If I was THAT desperate to eat it I'd ask around to see if anyone knew if it were communal, and if I didn't get a very clear answer I would leave it alone because I have willpower and I'm not a dick.

I'm sorry OP what a shitty thing to do to you! I hope they replace it.

(I'd also be very unimpressed with a boss who takes this kind of thing as a joke. It's not funny.)

Damntheman · 13/03/2019 09:00

*communal

Yutes · 13/03/2019 09:03

At my work place if it is out in general staff areas with no names on it, then it is fair game.

It is a bit crap though OP.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 13/03/2019 09:06

Suggest you bake some brownies with lots & lots of ex-lax, take them into the pub on your shift, then forget to take them home.

cstaff · 13/03/2019 09:07

You can leave anything you like around my office and it will be safe - that is anything apart from chocolate or sweets. They will be gone in 5 minutes. So I guess it depends on where it was left. Was it left where everyone else could see it - if so, I guess you wont do it again Grin

Pinkbells · 13/03/2019 09:25

YABU to let an Easter Egg piss you off.
