You have to have some boring practical things too

I think Kondo is a load of tosh designed to do one thing - spark joy for her by making her lots of money.

Have you read her books Silvery?

SachaStark · 12/03/2019 15:37

Marie Kondo covers this in "Spark Joy". I can't remember if it's also in "Life-Changing Magic of Tidying".

She says that you find the joy in "boring" items by considering the job they do for you, and how this can make your life more pleasurable. I remember the example she gave as being a slip to wear under your dress, which is boring by itself, but sparks joy when you think of how it adds to your outfit.

I suspect that I am not the right person to ask

As PPs have said, William Morris nailed this.

@Fluffiest

The book is far more interesting than the TV show

There is a whole system for how you sort through your stuff using categories (and an explanation for why you do this). Don’t think William Morris was giving practical advice on decluttering!
