Hi mums
I’m currently living alone with my daughter in a tiny two bedroom flat and just got a statement for my gas bill. I’m paying I feel way too much for the two of us and I’m curious as to how much you pay and do you find it cheaper being on a pre payment meter or do you pay a set tariff ?
I’m currently on a pre payment meter as I thought it would be cheaper but at the moment I’m topping up about £25 / £30 a week and that’s with the heating on low, hot water turned off 90% of the time.

This month hasent been so expensive as I’ve been staying with family.

I also pay my electric pre payment and pay roughly £15/20 a week on top.

Prepayment meters are proven to be more expensive. It's one of the ways society shafts people on lower incomes. Can you switch to a non-prepayment meter?

We pay each quarter. The bill last quarter was over £500, though. We've just switched to bulb as they can save us £150 per quarter apparently. Sometimes it's about who you're with, too.

I live in a 2 bed flat too. 2 adults and a 7 month old. I'm sure pre payments turn out more expensive. I'm also on pre payment this is my spending for gas and electric for past 30 days and the year. I'm in most days due to been on maternity leave.

Have you used a comparison site to find the cheapest tariff, if you switch to that you will pay the least ££, it won't help you to know how much anyone else pays. Keep it simple and move to the lowest rate you can get.

I’m open to switch, but I’ve read and heard of so many horror stories of people who think they are paying a set tariff then are slapped with an unexpected bill.

Even my friend has had the same issue; she recently had to pay a £600 gas bill. I’m not really in the position to pay that if it ever got to it so that’s why I assumed the pre payment would be better.

Prepayment definitely more expensive. I think Martin Lewis was going on about them a while back. Switch!

I'm with ebico as I like their not for profit stance.
I am happy to pay my share which means they can offer fairer prices to those like you on prepayment meters.

Thank you ladies. I’m going to have a look online and see what deals are around I can switch to

Some people don't seem to understand that you always have to pay for what you use and that if you don't keep up with meter readings you could get an unexpected bill. Prepayment does protect you from that but it shouldn't be a reason not to change it you can get a cheaper tariff

3 bed house, we have a set tariff and pay a direct debit every month. On average £25 a month gas and £20 a month electric.

I switch every year via Topcashback to a new company that has a good tariff & is offering a good whack of cashback.

itsbritneybiatches · 12/03/2019 08:18

Direct debit.

British Gas.

I probably pay more per kWh but I have access to my half hourly usage online so I can see what I am using. It's
Helped me use my utilities a lot smarter.

Also. Turning off radiators
In some rooms helps or just turning them down.

We are getting hive fitted tomorrow, an extra £16 a month for a year so I think this will also help reduce the bill.

I'm with EDF - recently done a switch online with Martin Lewis

I've got a payment card but with a normal Meter - I now pay £35 gas a month and £15 electric in a 2 bed house with the heating set for 18 all day
