What does your window cleaner ACTUALLY clean?!

Just that really. I have a window cleaner who is lovely and he has been cleaning my windows for a year. I live on a main road so my windows are done for unless they get cleaned on a regular basis because of the dirt build up from cars.

Every 6 weeks he comes and charges me £20 to clean the windows. He doesn't appear to clean the frames or anything UVPC related. Yet I'm sure when he first cleaned them he told me that "to keep your frames nice and white I could come back on a regular basis".

Surely the point of cleaning windows is that the whole thing is cleaned? Do they not include the door? My friend says that hers only cleans glass...

I'm going to text him later by the way to check...not 100% sure how to phrase it without coming across as arsey so thought I would hear what the standard is!

Portholes apparently. I just do them myself now.

whatamIactuallypayingfor · 11/03/2019 18:26

I can't, too many upstairs and I'm afraid of heights!

Mine just cleans the glass. Upv cleaning would be extra. I only pay £6 for mine though - 4 bed house with bay window at the front

jaseyraex · 11/03/2019 18:30

£20?! Mines £6 every three weeks and he cleans all the frames and ledges too. I'd try another if I was you!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 11/03/2019 18:31

Mine is £7 for front and back including doors and all UPVC frames! You're being ripped off OP

Justmuddlingalong · 11/03/2019 18:31

I'm all on one level. I've never known a window cleaner wash the frames, sills or doors. You could ask if he would and how much it would cost, but the price you normally pay just includes the glass.

SweetieJar · 11/03/2019 18:33

I wouldn't expect the frames to be cleaned, only the glass. That's all that any window cleaner I've had would clean, though if paid extra they'd clean the frames. That said I pay a quarter of what you do.

whatamIactuallypayingfor · 11/03/2019 18:34

The mind boggles, I just can't believe some don't clean frames!

Ok, so I have an extension and that means I have 10windows plus the glass in the front door and double doors (all glass) to back garden. He charged me £2 extra for the doors to the garden!

Is that terrible? I don't live in an expensive area or anything like that...

Mine charges £15 (three floors). But he doesn't do the frames. I do those, and clean the insides with a Karcher Window Vac the day he does the outsides (twice a month).

SweetieJar · 11/03/2019 18:37

I've genuinely never known any to clean frames. I think that cleaning them is the exception. There are 4 different window cleaners used in my cul de sac and none of them clean the frames.

MitziK · 11/03/2019 18:39

I pay a fiver in London for two largish upstairs windows, a massive bay and the front door small panels. For that, he also does the frames, sills, waters the window boxes if they're getting a bit dry in summer and the 5 wheelie bins if he notices they're a bit whiffy. He'll charge an extra fiver if I'm in and ask him to come through the house and do a large kitchen window, a fully glazed door and both largish upstairs windows. And he tries to get the worst off the soffits and underside of the gutters whilst he's there.

He uses a pole system, rather than a ladder - which is better because of the weird way my house is built up for flood prevention. Maybe because it's less work for him, he charges less and doesn't mind doing extras without being asked?

Happynow001 · 11/03/2019 18:43

My window cleaner charges £8 for the front of the house (restricted access to the back of the house) and cleans all sills and door as well as the windows.

isseywithcats · 11/03/2019 18:44

mine charges £8 and he does the glass not the frames thats three windows and patio doors at the back, two windows at the side, three windows and the outside of a porch at the front

whatamIactuallypayingfor · 11/03/2019 18:50

Ok so I can forgive him not cleaning frames then. He uses a pole system and it takes him about 20minutes to clean the whole house...

You've all inspired me to email another company for a quote AND to ask if the do frames! I feel utterly ripped off with the prices you all pay! I started with him when he was just starting up as I wanted to support a new business. Over time though I have begun to resent the fact I pay a high price plus he does only the glass.

Mine is £20 every 6 weeks or so. He just cleans the glass anything extra he will do but it will cost more.
I am on the south coast quite near the sea so seagulls and salt in the air means the windows do get grubby. I can’t believe people are paying as little as £8. You couldn’t get just your front windows done for that around here and I thought £20 was more than reasonable. Mine has a van with a special machine with water and cleaning agent premixed so not a man with a shammy and bucket.

TheOxymoron · 11/03/2019 18:54

I pay £80 every 5-6 weeks and he does the windows inside and out plus frames.
Lots of windows and doors so I feel it’s fair.

BlueJava · 11/03/2019 18:54

If you want the frames done why not just ask him for a quote - I get my frames done at the same time as the gutters are cleared - he does all upvc and glass in one go.

whatamIactuallypayingfor · 11/03/2019 18:59

. Mine has a van with a special machine with water and cleaning agent premixed so not a man with a shammy and bucket.

Same here- he uses some kind of special water. More than happy with a man and a bucket it's cheaper though.

I could ask for a quote for the frames too but I felt £20 was quite enough for windows to be honest...I will have a quote from a different company and compare. If it's the going rate round here then fair enough.

My nan pays hers £5...he is a man with a bucket though and has been doing it for 40years. He also stops at each house for a cup of tea and a chat Grin

the window cleaners in our road (there are several competing) only 'wet' the glass with a hose. tbh the windows look better if just left...
when we needed new windows we went for tilt&turn that open to the inside. we can clean all windows from inside without fallin out.

madeyemoodysmum · 11/03/2019 19:03

20 is the norm here. Where are you guys that only pay a few quid!!!! Jealous.

lpchill · 11/03/2019 19:05

Mine charged £12 for a two bedroom mid terrace. I brought a £15 extendable brush that the hose attaches too and do it myself. Saved me the money within two cleans and I do all the PVC the guttering and the conservatory (he chamfered is £80 for the whole lot when we first moved!)

igotdemons · 11/03/2019 19:06

I’m in the South East and I have a pure water fed pole window cleaner - he cleans all glass and UPVC frames of all our windows and doors and charges me £14. The windows in my house are massive (and there are a lot of them as it’s a large 4 bed) and a pain to clean so I don’t mind paying that for a job well done.

KondoKonvert · 11/03/2019 19:12

I pay £30!! In fairness he cleans them with a proper blade and we have small-paned windows that do take a while. He doesn't do the frames though.
