To hate 'in your ear' headphones?!

They make me feel like I'm underwater and always give me earache or headache. I don't think I like being attached directly to the technology either!

Please can someone recommend an alternative that would be good for running?

Am I the only person to come on here and say bone conducting headphones??!!! I’ve just looked them up and my mind is blown! They deliver sound through your cheekbones?!

How do the bone conducting ones stay put?

The band goes round the back and then the earphones bit goes over your ears like glasses and rests on your cheekbones.

SmarmyMrMime · 11/03/2019 23:41

Yup, bone conducting headphones. Fantastic things.

In ear earbuds seem to be yet another thing designed by a man who failed to realise that half the population is too small to use the unisex/ mens idea of small.

PetsFactor · 11/03/2019 23:47

I dunno, AirPods stay in my ears even when I’m upside down

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2019 23:51

I actually love my in ear headphones. They come with three or four different size ear pieces and the smaller ones fit perfectly !

AuntieStella · 11/03/2019 23:54

I have Aftershokz Trekz Titanium.

They're wireless, as is the newer model Trekz Air. The wired ones are Sportz

They 'leak' far less than other types

You do need to try them on if you wear glasses/sunglasses, to see if you're OK with how they fit over your ears when you have both on.

They are much safer for outdoors sports, as you can still hear the outside world (traffic, race marshals etc)

LizB62A · 12/03/2019 00:03

As long as you don't have them too loud, they won't damage your ears - same as any earphones really.
If they're uncomfortable then you might have small ear openings, like I do.
Just use the smallest size of the spare little silicone things that come with the headphones - it will make a big difference !

How do they not jiggle around and annoy you?

iklboo · 12/03/2019 07:29

I don't jog @MrsTerryPratcett Grin. I use mine because of a medical condition. They do fit nice and snug though.

AuntieStella · 12/03/2019 07:47

They move no more than sunglasses move , because they are steady around the ears. I rest mine at the back as well on a pony tail, but they can just hang and still be fine. I think fit can vary a bit, depending on how high/low your ears are.

All the home nations' Athleticsgoverning bodies approve bone-conducting open ear headphones for events (no in/over ear Ines at all)

Newyeardontcare · 12/03/2019 09:43

@Redcliff don't your ears get sweaty in them?

Can you wear the bone ones with glasses?

I first spotted the bone-conducting earphones one week on The Apprentice - they were a possible item for the teams to sell (and neither team chose them - fools!). If you have a hearing test at the hospital, you'll realise that they test how sounds goes through your ear and also how your bones conduct sound. Wearing hearing aids, I realised these were the headphones for me.

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2019 14:32

@Newyeardontcare - I wear my bone conducting headphones with glasses.

KnitterOfSocks · 12/03/2019 16:00

I wear my bone conductors with glasses as well, both normal ones and sunglasses (with contact lenses for actual vision). They are slightly springy and press on your cheekbones, sound quality is great.

Took me a short while to get use to the fact that there is a gap between the back of your head and the band, so they aren't tight on your head, but mine don't move a millimetre when I'm running.

Trekz do two sizes, normal and mini, might be worth finding a running shop that stocks them to try out.

I tried a pair of the Trekz Air at the running show - you can hardly tell you are wearing them. For phone calls, you just speak normally and the other person can hear you. I love having both hands free for note taking and sketching while I'm on the phone, means I can get my ideas down while I'm still talking.

KnitterOfSocks · 12/03/2019 16:01

I also find them useful for running events as lots of events don't permit in ear music, but are happy with bone conductors, so I can have my music

Redcliff · 13/03/2019 15:36

Never had sweaty ears even when its hot (the rest of me is a diffrent story)
