I feel like a completely ridiculous excuse for an adult but the other day I found out the difference between cottage pie and shepherds pie.

I am in my 30s and gobsmacked (also feel a bit stupid now it's so obvious). I genuinely thought they were the same thing.

Is there anything you discovered as an adult that was just common knowledge to everyone else? Or perhaps there's a phrase you've found out you have been saying wrong all this time etc...!

Help me feel a bit better.

That those bloody delicious things I dip in mango chutney are not pronounced Pompadom Grin

And that it’s - “wouldn’t say boo to a goose” not “boo to a ghost” - which I think makes much more sense Grin

MissionItsPossible · 12/03/2019 21:22

Big up to eenie da blyton

JellyTots2009 · 12/03/2019 21:25

I used to think the word 'truant' meant naughty. Whenever I was a kid and heard 'he's playing truant' I thought ooo he's being naughty.
Also not a nice one but I used to think the word 'nonce' meant 'stupid or idiot' I called my OH a nonce after he did something daft and he gave me an incredulous look and said 'don't ever call me that again!' I had to ask why he over reacted to being called a nonce only for him to explain the word.
I think I thought it was linked to the word 'nonsense' and people used it for short. Never did it again!!
Also agreeing with a PP I thought scotch eggs were vegetarian and offered one to a friend that didn't eat meat. It was only when I read the packaging that I realised.

moleeye · 12/03/2019 21:25

I've only just recently found out that dinosaurs were real. Took some serious arguing convincing by my brother and OH

Who knew 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh and I'm 39!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/03/2019 21:27

A friend of mine once asked a waiter recommending a cocktail why it was better for gin to be slow. She thought maybe it needed extra time to ‘mature’ to give it extra flavour and that’s why everyone recommended ‘slow gin’.

We’ve never let her live it down Grin

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/03/2019 21:29

I've only just recently found out that dinosaurs were real.

My friend convinced his ex that ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ was filmed in Indonesia because that’s the only place they’re no extinct.

MissClareRemembers · 12/03/2019 21:36

Until very recently i thought Pinterest was Pin Interest.

Ginsodden · 12/03/2019 21:42

I was in my thirties before I realised it wasn’t actually ‘the best little warehouse in texas’ as my parents called it...

OoohSmooch · 12/03/2019 21:42

Until very recently I thought a fire blanket was something you wore to protect you as you fled the fire, like a magic fire shield so you could run right through fire and be fine blush

This just made me laugh OUT LOUD! May have woken up my toddler but it would be worth it. BRILLIANT!

Darsar111 · 12/03/2019 21:44

I realised only a few years ago that Nancy in Oliver is a prostitute! Gave a whole new meaning to the song ‘Om-pah-pah’!

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2019 21:46

DS (now 10) took a lot of convincing by his Reception teacher that dinosaurs are not real. He’d see (animatronic) ones in Chester Zoo!

GetStrongKeepFighting · 12/03/2019 21:47

bubblegumunicorn nope. The same side of the moon is always facing the earth. You can only see side A no matter where in the world you are.

Raebeech · 12/03/2019 21:48

A friend of mine, who will probably read this and want to kill me, once looked at a map and asked what the blue river around London was called....
It was the M25!

DavidDavidDavid · 12/03/2019 21:48

@Kate0902900908 - Robin Hood is a mythical person; it seems it's unclear if he actually existed and certainly most of the stories about him appear to be legends rather than historical record.

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 12/03/2019 21:48

That Jerusalem is real and not made up

That Kevin Bacon doesn't actually sing footloose

LemonDrizzle69 · 12/03/2019 21:49

Some of these are hilarious.
When I was about 14 and in the supermarket with my DM, she asked me to go and get a dozen eggs. Off I went and came back to tell her they didn't have a dozen, the most they did in one box was 12...
I've no idea how many I thought a dozen was... It just sounded like A LOT!

poppym12 · 12/03/2019 21:49

I'm confused now about the duvet stitching mentioned earlier. I always have my stitching running lengthways and it fits the cover (king size) perfectly. The label is then at the bottom too.
I thought that originally duvets were stitched in lines so that the filling (probably goose, not duck Grin) could be distributed according to which parts you wanted to keep warmer ie shake more feathers down to the bottom if your feet were cold.

Hanumantelpiece · 12/03/2019 21:50

Sorry if it's already been covered, as I'm only on p19 but @bun "Give up the ghost" means release the spirit from the body - e.g. die.

GiantKitten · 12/03/2019 21:52

2 things

I'm a southerner & master (long a) isn't the same sound as masturbate (short a) for me.

and

for those of you confused (understandably) about the relative actual sizes of continents/countries - if you haven't got access to a globe, get a Peters projection map which corrects to real areas Smile

Tunnocks34 · 12/03/2019 21:53

I did think until recently that reindeers were mythical creatures. I thought they were just the magic version of deers, invented for Christmas. I’m a teacher too Blush.

FitMum87 · 12/03/2019 21:54

Til about early 20s I though a bunion was a big onion. Makes sense to me lol

VerbenaGirl · 12/03/2019 21:54

That you can’t eat bacon raw 😫

Accountant222 · 12/03/2019 21:56

Best thread in ages, I'm cry with laughter here, thank you all x

MsMustDoBetter · 12/03/2019 22:01

Sueelleker I know that hymn well and I've never paid much attention, but can you explain the lack of wall?

GiantKitten · 12/03/2019 22:01

Better image of Peters map - the one in the link chops the top off.
This shows how small Greenland is Smile
