I was taught that way but I don't write it that way now.

I dont know when i stopped doing that but it just seems inefficient.

DaisyDreaming · 10/03/2019 19:46

I’ve been doing it right! Thank you magic wand from 80’s tv. Don’t forget ‘and flick’ on the end of some letters!

Perfick · 10/03/2019 19:47

I was taught this way at school too, but these days I'm a rebel and I start from the bottom of the 'belly', go round then up the body and then a swift right for the hat.

justasking111 · 10/03/2019 19:48

oh I do it the lazy way, but I always put a line through my number 7.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 10/03/2019 19:50

I was taught that way although slightly different rhyme something about round the tummy. In the 1980's.

But write it in one stroke now, and can't remember when i started writing it in one stroke.

For those going who writes like that why are they teaching kids like that. Well no one probably but its more about making sure the correct number formation is "right" then you can devolop yoir own style

Fiveredbricks · 10/03/2019 19:50

I do it in one swoop. "Left, down and around" like that big orange neon pen fucker that used to be on TV in the 80's!

Rockbird · 10/03/2019 19:51

How the hell are any of you remembering how you were taught it in school? Grin I have no idea what they taught but I now do it in one stroke, hat first.

Heulog · 10/03/2019 19:54

"down, then around with a flag on high, that's the way we make a five"

Choccywoccyhooha · 10/03/2019 19:56

I wasn't taught any rhymes, and I write a five in one go.
No rhyme, no hat, how about that.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/03/2019 20:06

This is the way I was taught in the eighties, I also have a vague recollection of a magic/light producing pen and something about magic E....?
I also put a line through my seven, an affectation I adopted when I studied German.

TrainSong · 10/03/2019 20:06

It's a single line though, with a right angle and then a curve. Why complicate it? My writing is so messy if I went back to add the hat I'd accidentally add it to the number next to five and five would end up lookinglike one of those Spanish upside down question marks.

greenpop21 · 10/03/2019 20:07

I do it in 1 move from right to left so horizontally left, down and round. I also work in the 1 and 2 and that's how the chn are taught it too.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/03/2019 20:10

@Fiveredbricks yes the neon pen! And up and down and round and flick, thus creating a P like no person in real life ever uses!

To think I've been doing '5' wrong...
IHopeYouUnderstandWeArePuppets · 10/03/2019 20:12

I had no idea to form the in two strokes until I taught P1s. Now I always do them this way, makes the neater.

I always say “Straight back, round tummy and a hat!”

greenpop21 · 10/03/2019 20:13

Magic 'e' is now called a split digraph don't you know? I prefer magic e as it's more child friendly.

UrbaneSprawl · 10/03/2019 20:13

@ModreB must be by long-lost cousin...

Kitsandkids · 10/03/2019 20:13

I do it with a hat.

But... how do you all do a capital A?

I’ve always done it like an upside down V. So you start at the bottom, go up and back down then do the line across the middle.

Then I became a TA in a reception class where they insisted all capitals had to start at the top so A was written with one line going down to the left then one line to the right, then the line across the middle. I had to teach children how to write it like that. Madness!

greenpop21 · 10/03/2019 20:15

I do it like you Kits and am a TA in yr 1 & 2 and we start at the bottom now due to the expectation our government has to start joined writing by the end of KS1. Madness!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/03/2019 20:25

@greenpop21 oooh fancy. Magic E does sound like a nineties drug reference I guess 😁

Jaxhog · 10/03/2019 20:26

Wow! To think I've been doing it wrong for so many years!

Seriously, as long as you get the right result, it doesn't matter how you get there (in so many things tbh).

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/03/2019 20:26

I do a 5 in one line but from bottom to top...

Serialweightwatcher · 10/03/2019 20:34

I do the line first and then the bottom bit - I can't remember how I was taught, but we were taught handwriting and supposed to start every word with a little mountain (or whatever they called it), but bugger that Hmm

wheresthepurpleline · 10/03/2019 20:37

I have always done my 8 the wrong way round. Instead of starting at the top and doing an s shape I start at the top and do a reverse s - if that makes sense.

spugzbunny · 10/03/2019 20:38

@Sturmundcalm yes exactly! Hat first, LtoR, then loft pen and do down and round!

wheresthepurpleline · 10/03/2019 20:38

ps - why do my messages have the lilac background?
